Throne of the Red World — Rescuing Illidan and Conquering Outland

Spoiler Warning: This covers the latter half of the Blood Elf campaign in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. It follows the arrival in Outland, the rescue of Illidan, the promise regarding the thirst for magic, the sealing of the portals, the alliance with Akama, the assault on the Black Citadel, and the final command of Kil'jaeden. This is a narrative commentary written based on the events of the official game, not a translation of an official novel or a new canonical story. The later Burning Crusade is only referenced where necessary for distinction and is not merged with this conquest.

Flow of this Part

Draenor beyond the Dalaran portal → Illidan captured by Maiev → Battle surrounding the prison wagon → The oath after the rescue → The difference between healing and sating the thirst → The old deal with Kil'jaeden → Magtheridon's portals → Sealing of the four gates → Akama and the surviving Draenei → Generators and waterways of the Black Citadel → Two commanders and the Shadowkeys → Seizing siege weapons → The defeat of Magtheridon → The storm of fire over the throne → Departure for the Frozen Throne.

Chapter 1 · People who lost their home, a land that lost its world

The portal opened in Dalaran did not lead to a safe path outside the ruins. Before Kael'thas and Vashj lay a red, barren land. Where the outside of the land should have connected to another, there was a severance of the world. The fragments remaining in the sky revealed that this was not merely a country trampled by war, but the remains of a world that was once whole. The elves escaped death, but the place that greeted them was also a land where they had to fight to survive.

The name Vashj provided was Outland. A world that remained after Draenor, the old home of the Orc Horde, was torn apart. Kael'thas recalled Khadgar, the Alliance Expedition, and Ner'zhul's portals. After the Second War, the people of Azeroth crossed into the enemy's home, and Ner'zhul opened paths to other worlds. The story of how countless portals became not escape routes but the cause of the world's collapse is a tragedy already encountered in Part 30. The land the prince stood upon now was a distant consequence of that event.

It is easy to get lost if one confuses this place with the alternate timeline Draenor of later years. The Outland arrived at here is the remains of the original Draenor destroyed in history. Also, the escape portal from Dalaran and the massive Dark Portal in the south of Azeroth are not the same structure. Just because the story has left one world does not mean all portals passed through gather under one name. Different portals connect choices from different eras.

Chapter 2 · The answer the prince has not yet received

For Kael'thas, looking out at Outland, there was a question that needed to be solved first. Why is Illidan, whom Vashj seeks, staying in such a wilderness? Vashj does not say she knows the reason at this time. She had the purpose of finding her master, and Kael'thas sought to confirm if his knowledge could resolve his people's thirst. Their paths overlapped, but they did not begin from the same information or the same despair.

The prince's promise also still held conditions. It was an expectation to serve Illidan if he received help that could save his people. He had already shown resistance to Vashj, who offered demonic power in Dalaran. Just because someone who passed that scene has now entered the wilderness does not mean they have become a follower who has abandoned all caution. Garithos's execution order pushed the elves away from their old alliance, and the magic thirst made them seek a new one. The final confirmation remaining between those events was the meeting with Illidan.

However, the target of that meeting was not a lord waiting for them with an army. After three days of searching, what they found was a Night Elf base, and near it were Maiev's forces. The pursuit that did not end on the riverbanks of Azeroth had arrived in another world first. The story of the fugitive and the hunter did not close just because the portal closed.

Chapter 3 · The battle to seize the moving prison

Illidan was captured by Maiev and trapped in a magical prison wagon. Kael'thas and Vashj had to reclaim it before the wagon reached the Night Elf stronghold. The goal was not to destroy all buildings under the enemy flag, but to move one prison in a different direction. On the road between the two factions, the fate of the prisoner changed. To Maiev, it was a captive secured after a long pursuit; to the Elven prince, it was a path toward the knowledge to save his people.

The fact that they had fought alongside the same Night Elves not long ago did not prevent this battle. Kael'thas had helped Tyrande and Maiev protect the path of the refugees and corrected the fact for Malfurion that Tyrande had been swept away by the river. Now, he sought to rescue the Illidan they were tracking. The purpose of the prince who lost the Sunwell was continuing, but the alliance he believed could realize that purpose had changed. The path they walked together in Lordaeron became a front line blocking each other in Outland.

Reclaiming the wagon and freeing Illidan are not the same moment. He was in an unconscious state, and the prison's magical lock could not be easily undone on the road. Only after bringing him to the Blood Elf base guarded by Kael'thas's army could they find the time to do so. This is why the mission is divided into two goals: seizing the wagon and escorting it. They had to protect the moving prison to the end so that Maiev would not get a chance to reclaim it.

Chapter 4 · The one who owes freedom and the one who asks for help

Finally, Vashj opened the prison. Illidan was free again and asked who the Blood Elves standing by were. To him, Kael'thas was a familiar face, but the new names and circumstances of those with him required explanation. Vashj introduced them as mortal descendants of the old Highborne and conveyed that the prince and his kin had come to seek his teachings. The old bloodline connection between the Naga and the Blood Elves continued in this meeting.

Here, the relationship between those who saved Illidan and those who submitted to him has an order. First, there was the rescue, followed by the conversation asking what the help was, and then Kael'thas's oath. If one writes that Illidan commanded all of the prince's wars from the start, or that the final master-servant relationship was already complete when he received the first transport ship in Dalaran, this process disappears. The prince acted with Vashj, who came to find her master, but he had to hear the answer for his own people directly.

Maiev is also not a character who died or disappeared from history due to the defeat in this battle. The end of this mission shows the result of rescuing Illidan and bringing him to a safe base. One does not need to read the game's hero resurrection rules or selection rewards as an actual death and regeneration of a person. Her pursuit and subsequent fate continue, and the story after that will be encountered again with the materials of that era.

Chapter 5 · A new source, not a cure

Kael'thas asked Illidan if he could cure his people's magic addiction. Illidan's answer was not one that confirmed hope as it was. He explained that there was no cure, but there was another way to sate the thirst. It was a promise to provide more magic to the Blood Elves if they followed him. Returning to the state before the Sunwell and living by relying on a new source are not the same answer.

Chapter 5 · A new source, not a cure — This is an AI-generated illustration reconstructed based on public materials. It is not an official image.

If one erases that difference, the elves' choice ends too easily. The people were still suffering from thirst, and Illidan did not remove the dependency itself. He simply suggested another path because he thought there was no way to live once the existing source was gone. To understand the prince's story of accepting a dangerous promise, one must look at the choices placed before him together. It was not a decision made in a comfortable position of choosing between a full cure and corruption, but an alliance formed while searching for a source of survival.

Kael'thas and his Blood Elves swore service to Illidan. Illidan set the prince as his right hand. From that moment on, the help the prince was looking for connects to someone else's war. Blizzard's later introduction of Kael'thas also mentions the story of Rommath returning to Azeroth to pass on new knowledge of magic absorption. However, this is not inserted as an event that appeared on the screen of this rescue scene. The roles of Lor'themar and Rommath remaining in their homeland, and the distance that will continue between the prince and his remaining people, are covered in more detail in the characters/factions section and the next era.

Chapter 6 · The old deal behind the new alliance

When Kael'thas asked about future plans, Illidan explained his failure. This conversation includes a flashback after the Battle of Mount Hyjal. Kil'jaeden wanted to eliminate the Lich King who had turned his back on him, and he entrusted that task to Illidan. While Ner'zhul's soul remained within the Frozen Throne, the purpose was that destroying the throne would eliminate the rebellious minion. The promise of reward given to Illidan and the demon's rage toward the Lich King were tied into one deal.

As seen in Part 39, Illidan attempted a destructive spell on the Icecrown area using the Eye of Sargeras in Dalaran. Due to the intervention of the Night Elves, that ritual could not be carried out to the end. The Stormrage brothers left on their own paths after saving Tyrande, but for Illidan, the price of the failed mission remained. The reason he fled to Outland was to avoid Kil'jaeden's wrath. Just because the story shows the red wilderness does not mean the failure in Dalaran changed to a different cause.

This flashback is not a scene where Kil'jaeden came to make a new contract during the conquest. It is a scene explaining the already occurred visit and failure to the prince. If one connects the eras incorrectly, the demon's final warning happens twice, and the reason for the refuge disappears. Also, one does not conclude that all conversations at this time already explained Illidan's longer plans supplemented in later novels and expansions. The purpose the campaign directly reveals now was to eliminate Kil'jaeden's forces in the land where he was hiding.

Chapter 7 · The wound becomes the army's path

The land was not empty. The pit lord Magtheridon had gathered the surviving orcs and was ruling Outland. He had a citadel and troops, and he also had paths to bring in new demons. The portals that remained among those Ner'zhul had opened were those passages. The gateway that tore the world sent armies back into the ruins of that world. The destruction of one era became the foundation supporting the rule of the next.

If one only faces Magtheridon's troops in front of the citadel, the fight is hard to end. This is because new troops can continue to arrive from beyond the portals that are still open. Illidan planned to close the portals first and then attack the Black Citadel. The war Kael'thas joined while looking for a source of thirst had already grown into a conquest combined with supply lines, fortresses, rituals, and defense. The prince's soldiers did not stop at rescuing Illidan but became an army helping him take over a world.

The portals at this time do not mean only one Dark Portal connected to Azeroth. The goal required by the mission is four portals and the connection points in front of them. One should not broaden the result of closing them to a declaration for the entire world that all dimensional passages in Outland have disappeared forever. What this operation cut off was Magtheridon's reinforcement route. Not all boundaries of the world and all paths of the Legion were erased together.

Chapter 8 · Protecting the immobile commander

Closing the gates was not a ritual where the opponent waited. Illidan had to focus his power at the connection point, and Kael'thas's troops had to block the demons and fel orcs in the meantime. While the most powerful being leading the conquest was tied to one spot, the defense of the others allowed his magic to continue to the end. If one writes that Illidan defeated all enemies alone to open the path, the work assigned to the prince and the allied forces disappears.

The mission makes one experience this danger by having him protected for a certain amount of time at each portal. The three minutes on the game screen is a rule that must be defended, not a chronological record that every ritual in history was always exactly the same length. What is important is the relationship that time must be bought until the gate is completely closed. If the soldiers collapse, the subject of the ritual is attacked, and if the ritual is interrupted, the enemies in front of the soldiers do not end. The power to block attacks and the power to remove the passage needed each other.

Magtheridon's army also noticed the intruders' purpose. The attacks of the fel orcs and the reinforcements of the demons continued surrounding the portal sealing. Once the last gate was closed, Kael'thas confirmed that enemies could no longer be reinforced through that path. However, Illidan did not forget the scale of the remaining standing army. Cutting off the supply line was changing the conditions of victory, and that itself was not a victory that brought down the fortress and the lord.

Chapter 9 · The land desired by Akama's people

Not only the invader's army survived in the wilderness. There were also Draenei being chased by orcs and demons. The original campaign calls them by the name Draenei, and the later setting and appearance in World of Warcraft distinguish those led by Akama more specifically as Broken, or twisted Draenei. This is the reason why the troops met here are not depicted in the same appearance as the full Draenei paladin units that can be played later. The old name of the race and the differences revealed later are distinctions to help understand the story, not inserting a race from another world anew.

Chapter 9 · The land desired by Akama's people — This is an AI-generated illustration reconstructed based on public materials. It is not an official image.

The portal sealing mission has an optional objective to help a village surrounded by fel orcs. If one defeats those troops, the position of Akama and the survivors is revealed more clearly. What they wanted was to reclaim the land taken by orcs and demons. The freed captives joined the battle, rewarding the help. For Illidan, it was a way to gain local allies, but for them, it was a fight to reclaim their own history.

One also needs to distinguish between optional objectives and subsequent essential scenes. Not every playthrough takes the same path of killing all enemies in the village first, but the event where Akama and the Draenei appear and fight together when attacking the Black Citadel is included in the campaign's fixed progression. Therefore, one does not make this alliance a relationship that exists in history only when optional rewards are obtained. Conversely, one does not mix the long number of generations mentioned in the game's old explanation with the Draenor chronology organized in later years as the same number without any review.

Chapter 10 · A gate that cannot be breached by courage alone

In front of the Black Citadel, Illidan's forces faced a numerically larger enemy. Kael'thas conveyed the resolve of his kin ready to fight, and Illidan saw Magtheridon's long-standing complacency as a weakness. However, the elves who advanced toward the gate were stopped by defensive devices. Just because the soldiers had courage did not mean the fortress's machines and magic stopped on their own. In front of the gate of conquest, passion needed a new method.

Then Akama and the Draenei arrived. They avoided the enemy's surveillance and destroyed the generators that operated the defensive devices. The ability of those who move in hiding created a different entrance to the battle that was pounding the front with force. This is why one cannot explain the victory of this alliance only with visible heroes and a large army. If not for the local people's fight against the citadel and their infiltration abilities, the prince's troops would have had to pay a higher price for the same weapon.

Illidan promised Akama that his people would be able to take revenge on the enemy. After those words, Kael'thas and Vashj's attack orders followed. The conqueror needed a new throne, the prince needed a master to help his people's survival, Vashj needed the victory of the one she served, and Akama needed the fall of an old enemy. The four purposes pointed in the same direction inside the citadel, but it was not a relationship guaranteed to always be one in the future.

Chapter 11 · Waterways and generators, two commanders

There was not one path to attack the citadel. Illidan and Kael'thas's forces pushed in from the land, and Vashj's Naga entered through the waterways to attack the enemy's base. Water was not a boundary blocking the Naga but another attack route. The Draenei's infiltration, the Naga's underwater movement, and the Blood Elf's magic and battle line took on different roles within one fortress. The difference in race did not become a weakness of the alliance, and they found gaps that were not visible from the front alone.

Chapter 11 · Waterways and generators, two commanders — This is an AI-generated illustration reconstructed based on public materials. It is not an official image.

To head to the throne, they had to overcome two commanders. The 'Shadowkeys' objective, which requires removing the Master of Pain and the Mistress of Torment, is given as a fixed main mission. The waterway Vashj entered was also a path leading to the base of the fel orcs guarding the Mistress of Torment. The ruler of the citadel was not only in the last room. One had to tear down the layers of command and defense guarding it in order to reach the center of the conquest.

Destroying the four generators to stop the defense is presented as a separate optional objective. One does not write the event where Akama cuts off the device at the entrance in the opening scene and the path where the player finds and processes all the internal generators as the same mandatory sequence. The mission guide suggests using the Draenei to destroy the devices. There is also a rule of stealth where one is revealed if they attack or use spells, and one does not change that into a setting of a transcendental being that is never seen by anyone forever. Infiltration was advantageous, but it did not eliminate the danger of the fight.

Chapter 12 · Turning the enemy's weapons against them

The citadel's army had to replenish troops from prepared facilities. The rule of securing new units inside where one cannot build, and the resources obtained in various places, make this mission different from a war of expanding bases on a plain. What is important in understanding this battle is not who picked up a few gold coins in the corner first. It is the pressure of having to use the enemy's facilities and paths within the already seized fortress, replenish lost troops, and continue to advance. Depending on which direction one fights from, the path for allied support to arrive also changes.

Chapter 12 · Turning the enemy's weapons against them — This is an AI-generated illustration reconstructed based on public materials. It is not an official image.

Illidan suggested taking and using the demonic siege weapons of the nearby base. The optional objective of getting those weapons was a way to turn Magtheridon's own defensive means against him. If sealing the portals cut off external reinforcements, this seizure turned the power inside the citadel into the attacker's tools. The two operations shook the same goal from different layers. The strengths the citadel had piled up lost their masters one by one.

One does not insert the aerial transport plan that remained as a line not used in the original work as an actually completed operation. Also, one does not confirm the final death of a character from another era just by the names appearing in the enemy units of this battle. There is a boundary to verify between the rules expressed on the battle map and the history of the character that continues to later eras. Such distinctions do not reduce the size of the victory. They leave more clearly the result that four groups with different abilities divided and tore down the citadel's defense.

Chapter 13 · The one who replaces Magtheridon

Finally, the path opened up to Magtheridon and his remaining forces. He faced the strange enemy that had closed the gates and breached the defensive line. The battle to bring down the massive pit lord had not only Illidan, but the alliance of Kael'thas, Vashj, and Akama connected to him. The elf's thirst, the Naga's loyalty, and the Draenei's fight for their land overlapped in the final attack toward the same enemy.

Chapter 13 · The one who replaces Magtheridon — This is an AI-generated illustration reconstructed based on public materials. It is not an official image.

The defeated Magtheridon asked if Illidan was an envoy of the Legion or a being that had come to test him. The purpose Illidan revealed was not a test of a judge, but his own replacement. He declared that he would rule Outland in place of the old lord. In this scene, the source of power Kael'thas could not find in Azeroth appears not as a quiet refuge only for his people's lives, but with the dominion of another world. The choice for survival now completed a war that changed one lord into a new lord.

The name of the game mission has an expression to kill Magtheridon, but if one writes that his life ended at this time just by that name, the subsequent story goes wrong. The conversation after the defeat follows, and the official introduction of The Burning Crusade makes it clear that he is the former lord imprisoned by Illidan. Magtheridon was defeated but has not yet disappeared from history. Also, this place the original work called the Black Citadel leads to the Black Temple in later official retrospectives. One does not forcibly overlap the abbreviated map of the mission at the time and the geography of Shadowmoon Valley later as the same detailed map.

Chapter 14 · A command higher than the throne

Illidan declared victory. There was a new ruler in Outland. The achievements of sealing the portals and taking the citadel were clear, and the allies who fought together remained there. However, the fact that he took the throne and the fact that he escaped the demons tracking him were not the same. The high seat of victory had no roof to promise safety.

A storm of fire and rage covered the Black Citadel. While Kael'thas asked about its identity, Vashj realized a terrible presence was approaching. Kil'jaeden had found Illidan. The command he had given first had not yet been fulfilled. The Frozen Throne had not been destroyed, and the Lich King had not been eliminated. Illidan's achievement of hiding in the red world and gaining new forces was placed by the demon's eyes alongside the failure of hiding to avoid that command.

Illidan promised to eliminate the Lich King, saying he was strengthening his forces. Kil'jaeden saw potential in the newly gathered minions and gave him one last chance. It was a warning that if he could not destroy the Frozen Throne, he could not avoid eternal wrath. This transition, where the lord of one world must respond to the command of another being immediately after the declaration of victory, makes it impossible to end the Outland conquest as a simple conclusion of liberation. Even if he succeeded in cutting off the army by closing the gates, he could not close off the power above that army.

Chapter 15 · The cold world toward which the new alliance heads

After Kil'jaeden left, Illidan admitted that the hideout he had chosen was not wise. Again, the task was placed before him. He asked his allies if they would go with him to the cold center of death, and Vashj and Kael'thas responded that they would follow. The armies of the Naga and the Blood Elves now enter the expedition toward the Frozen Throne. This is the moment when the conquest of this part does not become a period settling in a new country, but the starting point of a more distant war.

To Kael'thas, the Scourge was an enemy that destroyed the Sunwell, his father, and his people's lives. To Illidan, there was the command of Kil'jaeden pushing him and the task of having to eliminate the Lich King. The two circumstances were combined into the same expedition going north. That does not mean all their intentions and future choices were tied into one. If one changes their common purpose at this time to a different relationship Kael'thas will have with the Legion later in advance, the choices and divisions that will still follow are not visible.

In the red wilderness, they saw the land that remained even if the world collapsed. In the Black Citadel, they saw that even if one lord collapsed, a command higher than that remained. Kael'thas came to the throne of another world looking for the power to save his kin, and the path to obtain that power headed again toward the heart of the Scourge. In the next main part, we will continue with the division of the undead occurring within Lordaeron and Arthas's choice to return north. The conclusion of the two expeditions that will be met in Icecrown later will be covered to the end as a separate development.

A small index connecting characters and terms

Outland: The remains of Draenor destroyed because of Ner'zhul's portals in the original history. Distinguish from the later alternate Draenor. The portal sealing in this campaign and the reopened Dark Portal in World of Warcraft are also not the same event.

Akama: The Draenei leader who fights with Illidan in this conquest. Together with his people, later distinguished as Broken, he seeks to reclaim the land taken by orcs and demons. Infiltration and generator destruction continued the attack at the citadel entrance.

Magtheridon: A pit lord of the Legion and the ruler of Outland before this conquest. He replenished demon troops with the remaining portals but was defeated by Illidan's alliance. This defeat, his later life as a prisoner, and his subsequent death are events of distinct periods.

Shadowkeys: The main mission requiring the removal of the Master of Pain and the Mistress of Torment in the Black Citadel. Distinguish from the optional objective of destroying the four internal generators and the optional objective of securing siege weapons.

Kil'jaeden: A demon lord of the Legion who intends to punish the rebellion of the Lich King created from Ner'zhul. He ordered Illidan to destroy the Frozen Throne and gave him one last chance in Outland.
