The Dragon Soul and the Sundering · The Sea Left Behind After Victory

Spoiler Notice: This covers the latter part of the War of the Ancients, Neltharion's betrayal, the Legion's retreat, the Sundering, and the diverging paths of Azshara and the survivors. The time-traveling characters from the novel are distinguished from the original ancient inhabitants. This is a narrative commentary reconstructing events confirmed in official materials into new sentences; it does not add unrecorded dialogue or inner thoughts of characters as official facts.

Chapter 1 · The Sky Entrusted to a Single Disk

Dragons flew over the battlefield. While demons poured through the portal opened by the court mages, the protectors of Azeroth sought to gather their own power. The Aspects, who cared for life, dreams, magic, time, and the earth, were originally beings who shared the same mission. There was hope that if they stood together, they could halt the Legion's endless advance.

Neltharion proposed a method to fulfill that hope. It was a way to imbue the power of each Aspect into a single artifact. The object, later called the Dragon Soul and then the Demon Soul, did not take the form of a massive fortress or a blade from the beginning. In the center of the ritual as depicted in official shorts, a smooth golden disk floated. The power that small object would contain could not be judged by its size alone.

The Aspects lent their power. The life of the red dragon, the dreams of the green dragon, the magic of the blue dragon, and the time of the bronze dragon were bound to the artifact. However, Neltharion's own essence was not contained within it. It was not a plan where every protector risked the same thing. The others entrusted their power, while the Earth-Warder who proposed the plan remained in a position to command that power.

This difference is not merely a weakness revealed later. It explains how trust turns into a weapon in this war. The power entrusted to a comrade could be turned against oneself by that comrade's hand. The Aspects were looking for a way to defeat the Legion, but the whispers of the Old Gods that held Neltharion used that cooperation for an entirely different purpose.

Not every disaster was as clear as green fire seen from afar. The danger that would tear the world apart was hidden within the proposal made by the closest protector. If the betrayal that began in the court collapsed the order on the ground, the Dragon Soul would collapse the order of the sky as well.

Chapter 2 · The Light That Burned the Enemy Returns to the Comrades

The Dragon Soul was used against the Legion. Immense power shattered the ranks of the demons. If one looked only at that moment, the artifact would have seemed like the answer to end the war. However, Neltharion did not stop the attack there. He turned the weapon against the other dragonflights.

The dragons who had given their essence could not be free before the artifact that had stolen their power. Official Aspect history introductions explain the situation where the Dragon Soul paralyzed them. In particular, Malygos's blue dragonflight suffered horrific damage. The flight that guarded the world's magic lost most of its members at the hands of a fellow protector. Even after the war ended, that loss would not end.

The destruction of a dragonflight did not just mean that strong soldiers had decreased. The long relationships and memories of those who handled and guarded magic were severed together. What remained for Malygos was the fact that he had survived and an irreparable void. This is also why one must remember this battlefield when reading about the blue dragonflight of later eras. The conflicts and complex choices of later generations did not arise from a vacuum.

Neltharion now bears the name Deathwing. A being whose role was to protect the earth came to be called by the name of destruction. The power of the disk was not given to him without a price. The published context of the novel shows the subsequent work of attaching metal plates to his body. It does not depict him as having the familiar iron armor and metal jaw from before the first betrayal.

The new illustration, contrasting the black dragon form from official videos with the golden disk of the ritual, expresses this betrayal in a single composition. The light and the positions of the dragons in the painting are a reconstruction for the narrative and are not a direct restoration of a recorded cinematic screen.

Chapter 3 · The One Who Reconnects the Broken Command

The front lines on the ground were also undergoing changes that were difficult to endure. After Ravencrest's death, the command of Desdel Stareye, who led the resistance, could not save the war situation. Even after he died, there were orders left to be given to the soldiers. Who guards which rank, where the archers should aim, and who helps the wounded. Even if the leader's name disappeared, such problems did not.

The person who took on that responsibility was Jarod Shadowsong. In the context of the published novel, there remain scenes of him gathering archers to target the Doomguards, forming defensive formations, and coordinating different warriors. An officer who had moved by receiving orders now had to decide the next actions of others. That change was not achieved by high rank alone. It was a process of doing what was necessary on a collapsing front line.

The resistance included not only Kaldorei but also Tauren, Furbolgs, and Earthen. The order of the court did not place them at the same center, but the war revealed the fact that they needed each other's strength. In the published context of the novel, Jarod stands as the commander of this coalition. The fact that they formed the same army is not about erasing strange races under one name, but a choice to protect different abilities and lives together.

Jarod's sister Maiev was also on the front lines with the priestesses. The demon threatening her and the sight of her brother turning his horse toward that direction show that the commander's responsibility and the danger to family are not separate. Managing the battlefield was a task of moving lines on a map, and at the same time, a task where one could lose the people within those lines.

If one reads Maiev at this moment only as the warden of thousands of years later from the beginning, an entire era disappears. She too had a past of having directly passed through this war. The person who would later take on the duty of watching Illidan was now fighting for the survival of her race and the coalition.

Chapter 4 · Protecting the World and Buying Time

The Legion was sending more troops. Even if the resistance defeated one unit, the next army could come as long as the portal opening at the Well of Eternity remained. The damage suffered by the dragons and the deaths of the commanders could not change this condition. What was ultimately needed was to close the portal.

In that process, the Dragon Soul becomes a decisive object once again. Malfurion's approach to retrieve the artifact from Neltharion's lair and the black dragon's obsession with reclaiming it appear in the published novel context. However, the crisis did not end just by moving the object. The Legion also knew that the immense power of the disk could allow Sargeras to cross over. Which hand it was in and where it was used determined the fate of the world.

Illidan is not explained as a simple one-sided character even at this time. The actions he committed after gaining power from the Legion do not disappear, but in the end, he stands on the side of reversing the portal's magic with Malfurion. The brothers were not people who had fought in the same way. Even while carrying different choices and responsibilities until the end, they had to be together at the moment of blocking the portal through which Sargeras was crossing.

As the magical battle becomes more important, the role of the warrior holding a sword does not disappear. If there had not been people holding the front lines and people buying time to block the portal, there would not have been a place left to execute the final spell. If one reduces the cause of victory to the power of one person, the sacrifice that created that time is lost.

Chapter 5 · A Small Wound Left on a Giant Being

Broxigar the Orc, who came from the future, stood on the side of creating that time. He was not a soldier born in the ancient Kaldorei society. He was a warrior who had experienced wars of a different era and crossed over to this place. Together with Krasus and Rhonin, whom we saw in the previous part, he left the choices of visitors who cannot be explained by original history alone in this war.

Broxigar meets his death while facing the Legion beyond the portal. The latter context of the published novel conveys the fact that his axe left a small wound on Sargeras. That wound was not large enough to fell the Dark Titan. However, it created a gap for Krasus and his companions to act together with magic.

The weight of this scene does not lie in the fact that an orc warrior was stronger than a Titan. It lies in the fact that in a fight with an absolute difference in power, even a small result created the possibility for the next action. Not all problems were solved with one wound. Others had to take over that gap, and the brothers had to finish the work of closing the portal.

What Broxigar left behind was not just a record of his own race's victory. There were many conflicts in the era he came from, but in this ancient war, his final choice led to protecting a world of people who did not yet know his race well. The history of Azeroth grows through such encounters. Even if they were not born in the same place and did not pledge loyalty to the same king, they could look together at a world that must not be lost.

Chapter 6 · When the Portal Closed, the Continent Also Split

The path for Sargeras to enter Azeroth completely was blocked. The magic that summoned the Legion turned backward, and the Well of Eternity could not remain a source of stable power. That collapse shook the world.

This event is the Sundering. The land of the vast ancient Kalimdor was torn, and the sea rushed into the gap. New coastlines were created, and roads that had been connected disappeared under the water. Even if a person who remembered the way to a distant city survived, there was no guarantee that the road would remain in the same place. The end of the war changed the map itself.

Where the Well of Eternity had been, a whirlpool remained where chaotic water and magic were entangled. The Maelstrom. When you encounter this place name in the future, if you think of it only as a dangerous route, you miss its deep past. There was the center of a civilization, there was a portal that attacked the world, and the price paid to sever it remained there.

Initial descriptions in official materials and later novels show the actions of the characters leading to the final battle with different depths. The roles of the time-traveling characters and the Dragon Soul have been reinforced. Here, it connects the brothers' portal reversal, the Legion's containment, and the collapse of the Well as confirmed in later published materials and official retrospectives. It does not merge all detailed scenes of different versions into one accurate battle sequence.

The Legion retreated, but the world could not return to its pre-war shape. The victory of those who survived was real, and the loss was also real. If one erases either of the two, the meaning of this ending changes. What was protected was not a paradise that remained as it was, but a world that could start the next life even after being wounded.

Chapter 7 · An Unfinished Throne Under the Sea

Water also reached Zin-Azshari. The queen's court, which had enjoyed the greatest magic and authority on land, now faced the encroaching sea. The appearance in the official Azshara video is the elf queen before she became a Naga. That figure with long white hair, a crown, purple skin, and golden eyes soon becomes the ruler of another world.

The new illustration depicting the moment magic blocks the sea is a scene to show that threshold. The belief that the shining court could dominate the disaster it had endured with greater power meets the sea that does not retreat by that belief alone. The stone architecture collapsing beyond the purple barrier is expressed as a new drawing of the original video and does not determine the exact location of every survivor.

Azshara's story did not end under the sea. Blizzard's Eternal Palace introduction explains that she made a dark deal with N'Zoth during the Sundering and that her loyal subjects turned into Nagas. The queen who summoned the Legion connected with another powerful being. A foundation was created for a new empire to be built on the ruins of the old one.

Characters like Vashj also remained in the history of this change. When she appears in the story of Outland and Illidan long after, she is not a strange ally who suddenly appeared. There was the life of the old court and the change that continued under the sea. The appearance of the Naga is not just a design for battle, but the result of the catastrophe this world experienced.

However, one cannot say that everyone swept into the sea during the Sundering survived as a Naga. Published settings convey the changes of the surviving queen and her forces. If one binds even the lives that were not saved to the same ending, the loss of the disaster is erased. The war ended above the surface, but below the surface, a power that would reach Azeroth again in the future was growing.

Chapter 8 · The Second Well Created by the Surviving Brother

For the survivors, Hyjal was an important land. Even though the world was split, the mountain remained. There, they could find the possibility of starting a new life. However, what Illidan left behind first was not just the scenery of a quiet mountain.

He poured water brought from the old Well of Eternity into the mountain's lake. The published latter context of the novel connects his thought of preparing for a future invasion with the newly brightening magic of the lake. The original Well had collapsed, but the water containing its power became a second source. Even after protecting the world, the conflict over how to protect that world did not end.

What was power to be left to Illidan was a danger that would invite another invasion to others. The fact that he helped the resistance did not make all his actions innocent. Official retrospectives convey that because of attacking his own kind and creating a source of forbidden power, he was put on trial and imprisoned under the watch of Maiev and the Wardens.

Here, the relationship between the brothers does not have a simple ending of reconciliation through the victory of the war. They closed the portal together and survived together, but the decisions that followed separated them. Malfurion had to care for the wounded world, and Illidan would carry the price of his choices for a long time. The time in prison continues until the Third War in the future.

The World Tree to protect the new Well, the blessings of the dragons, the long vigilance of the Kaldorei, and the exile of the Highborne who could not abandon magic are stories of the next era. The Sundering is not an event that ended history. It is the beginning that allowed different civilizations to grow on separated continents and caused those with the memory of the same war to choose different paths.

Chapter 9 · People Facing the Same Disaster in Different Places

There were lives that faced the Sundering even in places far from the Legion's portal. The battle of the resistance did not represent everyone in the world. To those who had never seen the Well of Eternity, the disaster of the land splitting reached them. The choices of other leaders trying to protect their own countries and people were continuing in the same era.

Pandaria is another important branch of this story. The official chronicle publication context conveys that that land in southern Kalimdor met a different fate amidst the destruction of the Sundering. To understand the reason, one must leave the elf court and follow the journey of Emperor Shaohao. The next part does not move time forward blindly but shifts the gaze to Pandaria, which is facing the same disaster.

The betrayal among the protectors, the coalition of soldiers, the final cooperation of the brothers, and the sacrifice of Broxigar were all flows that achieved this victory. However, to read the world placed after that victory, one must also look at the choices in other places. The sea split the land, but it could not split the fact that these stories happened in the same world.

Terminology and Character Guide

Dragon Soul, Demon Soul: Not two unrelated artifacts, but the name of the golden disk Neltharion created by gathering the essence of other Aspects. It is also called by darker names after the betrayal.

Neltharion, Deathwing: The Aspect who was the Earth-Warder and his name after corruption. The first betrayal of this era and his return in the later Cataclysm are different events.

Jarod Shadowsong, Maiev Shadowsong: The younger brother who commanded the resistance and the older sister who was a priestess. Maiev's warden duty continues with the imprisonment of Illidan after the war.

Broxigar, Krasus, Rhonin: Visitors who crossed over from the future to the War of the Ancients in the novel. Broxigar's sacrifice is different from a victory of defeating a Titan alone.

The Sundering, Maelstrom: The disaster where the old continent split due to the collapse of the Well of Eternity, and the whirlpool left at its center. It is not the same point in time as Deathwing's Cataclysm thousands of years later.

Azshara, N'Zoth, Naga: The old Kaldorei queen, the Old God, and the changed race that became a power under the sea after that deal. Vashj was a handmaiden of the old queen.
