Origins and Antiquity: Until the Five Wings Guarded the Sky

Spoiler Notice: This covers the Primal Incarnates who stood against Galakrond, Tyr, and the birth of the five Aspects. Kalecgos's later recollections and the time travel in Dragonflight are distinguished from these ancient events. This is a novel-style commentary written based on officially released materials.

The northern sky of Azeroth did not yet belong to the keepers. It was not a world that became safe just by spreading one's wings. There was a massive predator there that devoured its own kind, and to survive, one had to avoid its shadow. The names that would later guard life, dreams, time, and magic were, at first, merely primal drakes struggling for survival in that very sky.

Alexstrasza, Ysera, Malygos, Neltharion, Nozdormu. In later history, these names are spoken alongside their powers. However, before the powers came, there was choice and cooperation. The story of becoming the protectors of the world does not begin with a completed crown. It begins with how those who did not yet have crowns stood against a danger greater than themselves.

Chapter 1: The Shadow That Devours Its Own Kind

Galakrond was a massive predator in the north of ancient Kalimdor. His size alone was a threat, but after he became corrupted, he began to devour his own kind. The moment life that flew in the same sky became prey, it became a catastrophe that could not be viewed merely as natural competition between a strong predator and smaller animals.

If he were left alone, the entire natural order could be threatened. The danger Tyr saw was precisely that proliferation. This time, there were no banners of an army from outside the world, nor temples of the Black Empire. It was life already within Azeroth that had changed and threatened the world. The previous victory of imprisoning the Old Gods did not prevent all future dangers.

The keeper who recognized this demanded action. Tyr warned the other keepers, but when they did not step forward, he sought another path. The threat would not disappear on its own while waiting. The fact that the power to protect the world existed was different from the fact that someone was actually using that power. Tyr sought to bridge that difference.

Chapter 2: Five Names Not Yet Aspects

What caught his eye were five primal drakes moving together to survive. Even if each was not larger than Galakrond, their cooperation created different possibilities. Tyr approached Malygos in particular. As the power of the keeper and the life of the sky connected, a way to confront the massive predator emerged.

They did not enter that fight as the beings they would later become. Malygos was not yet the Aspect charged with the world's magic, nor had the mission to guard time been bestowed upon Nozdormu. Ysera was not yet the Dreamer, and Neltharion was not yet the later Destroyer. If one places the completed legend backward into the past, it blurs what they gained and what they lost.

Under Tyr's guidance, the five stood against Galakrond, and after ending that threat, a new path of protection opened. Here, we do not invent attack sequences or final lines not found in public materials. The core of this transition is clear. The lives that acted together to protect one another now began to discuss their qualifications to protect a wider world.

Chapter 3: To Whom Shall the World Be Entrusted?

Tyr requested that they grant the five the power to protect Azeroth. However, the merit of stopping a danger did not automatically gain the consent of all keepers. Odyn opposed it. To him, the dragons were still primitive life forms, and the responsibility to guard the world should be left to the Titan-forged.

It was not simply a matter of distinguishing between strong and weak beings. Can only keepers made of stone and metal protect the world? Can that responsibility also be entrusted to beings born and living within the world? The birth of a new protection revealed what the existing authority believed in and what it feared.

The other keepers did not stop at Odyn's opposition. The five became Aspects through the power of the Pantheon, and Odyn left to create his own warriors, the Valarjar. A conclusion where all keepers walked the same path after stopping a catastrophe did not come to pass. Even within the purpose of guarding the world, the methods of protection and the objects of trust diverged.

Chapter 4: Life and Dreams, Magic and Time

Alexstrasza received Eonar's blessing and took on the role of guarding life. If one thinks of the Queen of the Red Dragonflight merely as a powerful dragon that breathes fire, one misses her mission. Having power and taking the responsibility to care for living things are different stories. No matter what wars occur in later ages, this mission becomes the starting point for reading her character.

Her sister, Ysera, came to care for the growing nature through the Emerald Dream. Just because both sisters received Eonar's blessing does not mean their roles were the same. As the protection of life and the care of nature within the dream connected, the Green Dragonflight formed a relationship with another world. The structure and evolution of the Emerald Dream is a subject to be explored deeply in a separate setting section.

Malygos took on magic and hidden visions with the essence of Norgannon. Nozdormu received the power to guard time from Aman'Thul. The ability to wield magic and the responsibility to monitor it, and the work of existing within time and guarding the paths of time, are different. The mission of the Aspects carried a burden as heavy as the immense power they held.

Neltharion of the Black Dragonflight is remembered as the Earth-Warder. Let us not immediately merge the name of this era with the name Deathwing later on. Even for a reader who knows of the future betrayal, the starting point that he was once a guardian of the world is necessary. The weight of lost trust becomes deeper when one knows what was entrusted to him before.

Chapter 5: Those Who Accepted the Blessing and Those Who Remained

The birth of the five Aspects did not change all primal drakes into the same form at once. Some accepted the Titan's gift and continued as dragonflights, while others wandered the northern lands and the Dragon Isles without accepting that order. The distinction between dragons and primal drakes is not merely a label dividing size and wing shape. It is also the background for different choices and subsequent conflicts.

This difference appears again when reading the struggles of the Dragonflight era later on. However, if one compresses all the wars of the future into this one ancient day, the long transformation disappears. First, there was the blessing and the delegation, and the history surrounding that choice followed. One must read those differences concretely by following the figures and eras identified later.

Traces of that long protection remain on the Dragon Isles. Blizzard's introduction to Dragonflight explains that Tyr helped the dragons, and when the dragons settled on the isles, they built Tyrhold. The massive facility connecting the valleys is a trace that the work of caring for the world continued even after the battle ended. Where those who flew in the sky stayed, architecture, memory, and a society living together also emerged.

Chapter 6: Asking Again After Losing the Crown

Let us move time much further forward. In the official introduction to Dawn of the Aspects, Kalecgos contemplates what the dragons can do after losing their power following Deathwing. Through the past shown by artifacts, he sees the era of the primal drakes through Malygos's eyes. One must distinguish between the present time of this novel and the antiquity viewed within it.

That framework asks again about the meaning of this origin. Did the dragons become guardians only because they received great power? Was there not a time when they faced danger together even without great power? The reason for looking back at the past amidst the uncertainties of the later age is not just to boast of the old crown. It is to find what can remain even after the crown is gone.

The time travel in Dragonflight also deals with the past, but one cannot read every screen as the confirmed history of antiquity. In Dawn of the Infinite, a Tyr who has become an enemy appears in the timeline changed by Murozond. One must distinguish between the original keeper and the existence in the altered timeline. The later battles show why the mission of the Aspect who guards time itself is a dangerous responsibility.

Chapter 7: The Responsibility Left Under the Wings

Proto-dragon, Aspect, Dragonflight, Tyrhold, and Valarjar are words that continue from this era to the future. The cooperation between Tyr and the five created new guardians, and Odyn's opposition left a different path of protection. Even when one event ends, the choices within that event extend into the future.

The wounds and seals of the world seen in Part 4 now become the responsibility of those living upon it. The guardians of the sky were born, but not every guardian within the world remained faithful forever. The next installment will follow the conflict between Loken and the other keepers, and the records and lives moving to the south. Even after massive wings began to cover the sky, an ancient darkness was waiting in the depths.
