The World Tree of Hyjal · A Long Vigil Begun in a Shattered World

Spoiler Notice: This covers the Night Elves gathered at Hyjal immediately after the Sundering, Illidan's second Well of Eternity, Nordrassil and the blessings of the three Aspects, and the society rebuilt by the Sentinels and Druids. Returning to the survivors of Kalimdor from the previous part that looked at the same era in Pandaria. The subsequent War of the Satyr and the exile of the Highborne/founding of Quel'Thalas will be divided into separate parts. Events confirmed in released Chronicle samples and official game materials are explained with new sentences.

Chapter 1 · There Was No City to Return to After Victory

The Burning Legion's invasion was halted, but victory did not return the old world. Kalimdor was sundered and the Well of Eternity was gone. For the survivors, they needed land to stand on immediately more than they needed a lost empire. They moved toward Mount Hyjal, which had escaped destruction. What followed the end of the great war was not the next conquest, but the search for a place to live.

Those who arrived at Hyjal were not a group that shared the same thoughts. There were those who had resisted the Legion, and there were surviving Highborne. People who remembered the previous cities, magic, classes, and conflicts mixed in the new land. Just because the sea had swallowed the cities did not mean it had washed away the differences between the people.

Malfurion and the other Night Elves decided to ban the use of arcane magic. This was because of the experience that the indulgence in the Well of Eternity had summoned the Legion and led to the tearing of the world. This ban was not a lifestyle preference chosen in a peaceful setting. It was a postwar choice intended to ensure that the same tragedy would never happen again.

However, the same loss did not lead everyone to the same conclusion. Some thought that one must stay away from dangerous power to survive, while others thought that losing that power would leave them defenseless against the next enemy. On the summit of Hyjal, those two judgments face each other once again.

Chapter 2 · The Old Power Left in the Silent Lake

Illidan had filled several vials with water from the Well of Eternity before the Sundering. And he poured a portion of it into the lake at the summit of Hyjal. What appeared before the people was a second, smaller Well of Eternity than the one before. The power of the ruined world had not all vanished. One survivor had brought it to the new land.

The published Chronicle states that Illidan argued he needed the power to face the return of the Legion. He did not entirely deny the possibility that the Legion might return. The problem was how to prepare for that threat. To Illidan, the new Well was a means of defense, while to the other survivors, it was a danger that the gateway for an invasion had been reopened.

A conflict erupted between Illidan and those who sought to stop him, and Malfurion had to subdue his brother. Some Highborne agreed with Illidan's thinking, but the majority of the Night Elves did not. This confrontation is diminished if explained only as one brother hating another. It was a moment where the safety of the community and one man's conviction pointed in different directions.

Illidan was bound in an underground prison. Malfurion, with the help of Cenarius, imprisoned his brother and entrusted Maiev Shadowsong with the task of watching him. The published Chronicle explains that this led to her role as a Warden and the establishment of a professional jailer organization. An immediate punishment became the beginning of a long-standing institution.

In this era, Illidan is not given the wings and hooves he would later have after absorbing the Skull of Gul'dan. Even if a character's name is the same, the time they have passed through is different. The event where Tyrande later releases him is a story for the distant Third War.

Chapter 3 · How to Protect the Remaining Well

Hearing the news that there was a new Well, three Dragon Aspects gathered at Hyjal. Alexstrasza the Life-Binder, Ysera the Dreamer, and Nozdormu the Timeless. They also knew that this power could become a path for the Legion again. So, they did not leave the Well unattended, and they planted new life upon it to ensure the power would not be misused.

A massive tree grew from the magic-infused seed of Alexstrasza. Its roots wrapped around the water of the Well, and its branches covered the sky of the summit. The Night Elves called the tree Nordrassil, the Crown of the Heavens. It was not just a tree of immense size. It was a seal that spread life to a world wounded by war and protected the dangerous power.

This is a newly created scene referencing the red Alexstrasza, green Ysera, and bronze Nozdormu confirmed in the published Chronicle illustrations. The tree of Hyjal and the three Aspects are the center, and the placement of the lake, ruins, and survivors has been recomposed. It is not an illustration that copies the pictures from official books or presents an exact ancient map.

The survivors promised to protect the tree and the Well. The purpose was different from the new royal palaces built to enjoy the power of the past. Living close to this power came with not only what one could do, but also what one must not do. Life beneath Nordrassil became a matter of keeping that promise for a long time.

Chapter 4 · The Blessings of Life, Dream, and Time

The three Aspects did not repeat the same blessing three times. Alexstrasza infused the tree with power and vitality, ensuring the benefits extended to the Night Elves as well. Ysera connected the tree and the Druids to the Emerald Dream. Nozdormu's blessing allowed the Night Elves to enjoy immortality as long as the great tree stood.

If one understands this connection, one realizes that the Druids' sleep is not merely a long rest. Malfurion and his peers could enter the Dream before, but it required difficult meditation. The new blessing opened that path more freely. Even if they left the world where their bodies were awake, the nature they had to learn did not disappear.

Immortality should not be read as meaning they would never die in battle. The blessing of Nordrassil is connected to a life free from aging and disease, not armor that nullifies all blades and flames. The fact that those who protect the tree must face dangers in the future remained unchanged.

Moreover, this blessing came with the condition that it would last as long as Nordrassil stood. For the survivors of that time, it was a gift that opened a long future, but in the context of the entire story, it becomes a promise that connects the existence to be protected with the lives of the people. To understand what is lost in the Battle of Mount Hyjal in the distant future, one must first remember what was received at this time.

Do not confuse Nordrassil with Teldrassil or the later Amirdrassil as the same tree. Just because the names are similar does not mean they grew in the same era. Each origin, loss, and new birth continues separately in the chapters of their respective eras.

Chapter 5 · New Leaders Where the Royal Palace Once Stood

As time passed, Night Elf society spread from Hyjal to the Ashenvale forest in the south. The published Chronicle states that about 9,400 years before the opening of the Dark Portal, Tyrande reorganized society and the military, centered on the Sisterhood of Elune. This is why the moment the Sundering occurred and the establishment of the Sentinels are not compressed into the same day.

Azshara's court was gone, but the task of governing and protecting the community remained. The Sisterhood of Elune was an organization that had remained relatively intact through the War of the Ancients. Tyrande established a new order on that foundation. The protagonists of the war did not become free from daily life just because the final battle had ended. The next lives of the survivors also needed a map.

The new military organization created by Tyrande is the Sentinels. The female warriors, equipped with faith and training, patrolled the forests, guarded against threats, and formed relationships with the creatures of the land. They were protectors moving in a different space than an army reclaiming the plazas of a fallen empire.

Malfurion expanded Druidic culture. Among the mages of the past, there were those who left arcane magic to follow his teachings. The Druid community was not organized in the same form as the strict military hierarchy of the Sentinels. Within the same Night Elf society, a different way of protecting nature emerged alongside.

Chapter 6 · Those Who Walk the Forest and Those Who Walk the Dream

Druids explored the Emerald Dream and learned the forms of animals. The ability to transform into bears, feline beasts, and winged birds did not end with just the knowledge of observing nature from afar. It was a way of experiencing the ways of other life forms with one's own body. The specific sects and limitations of this ability will be covered more deeply in a later setting chapter.

The Sentinels had the task of recognizing the footprints in the forest now and the threats crossing over today. The long time toward the Dream and the boundary of reality meant the community could not be protected by only one side. The living forest needed exploration and care, but it also needed someone to guard that forest today.

The new Sentinel illustration reflects the purple skin, long ears and eyebrows, blue-violet hair and silver eyes, and curved bows and quivers confirmed in the official archer models. The models from the Third War era are references for appearance and weapon types, and are not indicated as a restoration of exact ancient attire or specific patrols.

The fact that the forest grew back did not mean all the dangers within it had disappeared. The traces of the satyrs and demons originating from the War of the Ancients lead to other fights later. A quiet border does not remain quiet forever. This is why the Sentinels and Druids are tested together in the next part.

Chapter 7 · People Who Passed Through the Same Disaster but Have Different Answers

Not all survivors accepted the path of the new society comfortably. Among the surviving Highborne, there were those who could not bear to abandon arcane magic. The memory of old power, the longing for magic, and the new order that viewed it as dangerous remained together.

Even if trees grow and cover the forest, this problem does not disappear on its own. The community wanted to prevent past tragedies, and some Highborne claimed the right to use their power and culture again. The fact that this confrontation leads to the exile of Dath'remar Sunstrider and the voyage to the east after many years will be covered in a separate part. Do not bundle all postwar changes into one event at once.

Nordrassil became the center of the new life, but having the same center did not mean everyone walked the same path. The history of the new world is not just a story of the victors of the war dividing the remaining land. It is also a story of people who survived together choosing again what to protect and what to leave behind.

Chapter 8 · The Long Vigil Is Only the Beginning

The tree of Hyjal showed life that the Sundering could not erase. The roots wrapping the dangerous Well, the blessings of the dragons, the path opened to the Dream, and the Sentinels walking the forest were all connected into one new order. Beneath it were people who changed how they lived rather than reviving the empire of the past.

However, a long life is not a gift that guarantees an ending. If one can live for thousands of years, there is also something that must be protected for thousands of years. The long vigil of the Night Elves was not a door to avoid future wars and internal conflicts, but the time to pass through those events.

At the end of this part, the forest is growing again. Huge branches are cast over Hyjal, and watchful footsteps continue in Ashenvale. In that quiet time, new dangers and the separation of the next era grow. The story of those who saved the ruined world turns into a story of those who protect the world for a long time.

Terminology and Era Guide

Mount Hyjal, Second Well of Eternity: A refuge that escaped the Sundering and a new source of power created by Illidan with the remaining water. Distinguish its location and size from the first, lost Well.

Nordrassil: The World Tree called the Crown of the Heavens. It wraps the new Well and connects the blessings of the three Aspects and the vigil of the Night Elves. The events of Teldrassil and Amirdrassil are covered in their respective eras.

Alexstrasza, Ysera, Nozdormu: The Aspects of Life, Dream, and Time. These are the three Aspects that blessed the tree; do not expand this to say all Aspects of that time participated together.

Emerald Dream, Druid: A realm deeply connected to nature and the path of exploring it. The origin of the Dream, the later Nightmare, and the various sects of Druids will continue in related setting chapters.

Sentinels, Sisterhood of Elune: Organizations that have the foundation of military protection and faith in the society rebuilt by Tyrande. Do not call them by the same name as Malfurion's Druid community.

Maiev Shadowsong, Warden: The person and organization that continue from the role of guarding Illidan's prison. Do not move the later weapons, attire, and pursuit events forward to the appearance immediately after the Sundering.

Further Reading

In the previous part, we read about the same era of the Sundering, the choice Shaohao made to save Pandaria and leave the mists. This part continues with the reconstruction of those who survived in Kalimdor at that time.

Story to follow in the next part: The War of the Satyr and the joint response of the Sentinels and Druids, the pack of wolves that sought to gain power and its danger. Then, read separately about the exile of the Highborne and the founding of Quel'Thalas, moving on to the human kingdoms and the Troll Wars.
