When the General saved Mari, she had lost consciousness. In contrast to the bright landscape on the highest level, her sleeping memory led into a dark room. It was Mari three days before he met her. In place of the confidently chattering hacker was someone shut inside a disordered home, pursuing only traces of Mago.

Mari waited for the results of a request to an older female hacker she knew. The material her acquaintance found was named the Sanabi Project. Research into controlling personality data. Rather than commanding data that moved like a human mind directly, the technology steered it in desired directions through brainwashing and suggestion. Forbidden technology, research into which alone constituted high treason, was growing inside an enormous corporation.

The hacker had also found something odd. Research into controlling personalities existed, yet there was no process for creating the personality data itself. It looked as if completed data had arrived from somewhere. If every labor robot, every Worker, operated with that personality, the corporation could obtain an enormous army. Mago, seemingly lacking nothing, was preparing to overthrow the royal family.

Her acquaintance considered ways to use this information, but Mari checked her safety first. The hacker had, however, reopened the project on a private server outside the dark web. A trace remained. Mari told her to erase the information immediately and disappear. What had been a discussion of the material’s value became a warning about whether she could remain alive.

The doorbell rang. Thinking her boyfriend had arrived, the hacker stepped away. Gunshots followed. The people who appeared ordered cleanup and file retrieval. Discovering that the information had been shared with someone else, the security team ordered a report to the board and activation of the Final Resolution Protocol. Mari witnessed danger reaching beyond herself. The life of the person who helped find the material was cut off, and the procedure for erasing an entire city began.

When Mari woke, the General asked whether she had truly come to avenge her father. At first she avoided him, then finally said no. She was helping him to keep a promise to her father. Those words went beyond the purpose she had explained earlier. The General did not know the promise, and Mari still could not tell him all of it.

2. Mufin Will Not Return

Mari looked for Mufin. The drone that had fled, hacked, and rescued the General with her was missing. When she finally found it, Mufin was broken by the impacts. As the little machine lay motionless, the expression Mari had held together crumbled too. She embraced it and grieved.

The General brought her a cloaking drone she could use instead. In his way, it was a practically helpful solution. To Mari, however, Mufin was not something replaceable by another object with the same function. The General harshly called it merely a robot. His judgment of it as a machine imitating a person left her with a deeper wound.

Mari offered the harmonica again. This time she was not lightly suggesting a new talent to discover. Conviction that he could surely play, and desperation, filled the gesture. The General drew a boundary: he was not her father. He believed that a girl who had lost someone else was asking him to fill her father’s place. To Mari, the words meant something very different.

She smiled, but it was unlike her earlier smiles. Self-reproach over what she had expected mingled in it. Faced with despair that the hope she clung to might be futile, she tried to leave herself only the plan again. She told him to go through to the end regardless of what he saw. It was an injunction pointing the opposite way from the words he had heard from his daughter in his memory.

They set off for Mago headquarters. The General had heard that Sanabi was there, and what Mari sought was there too. Sharing a destination did not bring their relationship closer. In the factory, hands had reached out to save each other; now came a time when even those hands could not reach each other’s wounds.

3. Training That Does Not Fit the Time

On the highest level, the national military’s Tombstone unit was operating. These were unmanned troops sent by the royal court, rather than Mago’s private soldiers. Because they attacked indiscriminately around their deployment point, the General and Mari became targets too. The General thought this should not happen while Operation Zero was in effect. The order in his memory collided with the present once again.

His equipment made the heavily armored troops difficult to face. Inserting the chip Mari gave him revived training from his military days. It was the day Baek brought the General’s daughter to the training ground. The child wanted to watch her dad train. Before the adults caught between military rules and a child’s request, she promised to behave quietly and not interfere.

The General trained before his daughter. The chain arm’s powerful combat techniques returned to his body. Later, Song explained that the military firewall had been hacked, and only a single child had entered through that breach. As the question of who performed the hack approached his daughter, noise entered the memory. Information unexplained by a simple training record appeared and was then blocked.

The General pressed Mari about the chip’s origin. She claimed to have obtained it at the black market. He suspected such an item could not circulate there, but she evaded the question by asking whether he intended to catch Sanabi. Invoking the objective he knew, she covered his doubt. Within her existed both the person hoping he would recognize her more fully and the person trying to prevent him from straying onto another path.

Breaking through the troops with his recovered techniques, they boarded a flying train. Mari played the harmonica. When he asked why, she asked in return whether he had loved his daughter. Then she said he must hate Sanabi. The General found a gap in that conversation. He had never told her that Sanabi had murdered his daughter.

Mari tried to tell him who he was. But to the General her voice sounded like noise. He was neither pretending not to hear nor avoiding a reply he did not wish to give. The message genuinely did not reach him. Discovering that even this was blocked, Mari despaired. Between them lay the helplessness of truth that could not arrive even when spoken directly.

4. The Headquarters Doors Open

The enormous flying battleship Firebird approached the train. The Tombstone unit’s firepower could turn the surroundings into a sea of flames. The General had Mari scatter the train’s cargo compartments and exploited their explosive anti-theft devices. Dodging incoming missiles and incendiary bombs, he attacked. He barely brought Firebird down, but the train had exhausted its fuel as well.

The emergency landing system brought them to headquarters. There, Mari looked around and vomited. The General could not tell what she had seen. To him, the building seemed simply empty of people. Mari passed it off as motion sickness. Standing in the same space, they were not seeing the same landscape.

As they split up to investigate, an S.O.S program connected before the General. A door opened with Worker 17287’s login. The system reported one irregular project and asked whether to terminate it. When he chose termination, his consciousness went dark too. Rather than behaving like someone merely searching for information, he responded as a subject the system could directly control.

When he woke again, headquarters was filled with corpses. He was startled as though they had appeared suddenly, but Mari responded by asking whether he could see them now. She explained that the cognitive filter had been switched off. The barriers concealing the city’s truth were inside his perception as well as among the devices in its streets.

Mari said Sanabi was underground. The headquarters’ enormous statue-shaped robot declared the deadline expired and ordered executives to commit suicide. Mari again explained that Mago was destroying the city to eliminate evidence of its high treason. Then she said the evidence of that crime was the General’s own existence. When he asked who she was, she turned that question back upon him.

As the statue was about to attack, Song appeared and destroyed it. She was the junior he remembered. Yet she did not greet him. She addressed Mari as the young lady and said it had been a long time. Her offer to take Mari out of the city did not include the General.

When he approached and reached out, Song attacked. She treated him as a dangerous machine without recognizing her former superior. Mari threatened herself with a pistol to demand that he be allowed to go. Song threw the General far away and took Mari’s gun. It had no bullets. She reprimanded Mari. A situation in which she had to pretend she would hurt herself tore trust even between people trying to protect each other.

Regaining consciousness on the stairs, the General had two directions before him. Below lay the route to the basement where Sanabi supposedly waited. Above lay the route back to Mari, where he could learn what was happening. This is the actual branching point between the game’s endings. The conclusion reached by choosing the basement is a separate branch. The subsequent narrative in this series follows the true-ending path of returning upward.

He went up. Song blocked the way again. Wary of an advanced combat robot, she sought to carry out the royal command. The General asked whether she recognized him, but communication did not work properly. The fight began. Song skillfully wielded a flaming metal weight and chain, a mechanical arm, and a shotgun.

During combat, she noticed that her opponent fought in the same manner as the General. This did not turn into joy. Seeing an unknown machine use the techniques of the person she revered instead intensified anger and confusion. It might be connected with his death. She released even her limiter and attacked. The General subdued her, but victory brought him only more questions.

Baek appeared. He too did not recognize the General. Soldiers leveled their guns, and when he approached, Baek’s mechanical prosthetic knocked him down. A withdrawal order had been issued, and the royal court would settle the situation. Mari had been allowed to leave according to her wishes. When Song protested, Baek said they had no right to decide her choices for her.

Song reported that this machine fought like the General. Baek noted that these were not common techniques. They also discovered an encryption filter on the voice of the General, who had awakened again. Only after its removal could the ranks he called out reach them.

The General accurately recited the affiliations and full names and ranks of Colonel Baek Ho-tae and Major Song I-sun. In a world where no one recognized him, this was a trace showing that the memories he knew were not all false. He even asked about Operation Zero, but that order did not exist in the present reality either. Baek decided to investigate aboard the transport. Song shut down his system, and the General fell back inside his memories.

같은 풍경을 보고 있어도 서로 다른 진실을 마주하는 두 사람의 모습이 정말 안타깝네요. 마리와 준장이 겪는 이 엇갈림이 게임의 몰입감을 더 높여주는 것 같아요. 😭
