Volume 1 · Before the World Had a Name — The Heart of a Sleeping Star
Spoiler Notice: This series covers the Warcraft universe and ancient history, leading up to the conclusions of games and expansions. This installment deals with the forces surrounding Azeroth and the meaning of a world-soul, long before humans and orcs began their war. This is a narrative commentary written based on official lore and is not a translation of official novels. Sentences describing scenery are reconstructions for atmosphere, and unverified dialogue or the inner thoughts of characters are not presented as facts.
Even in an era when no one looked up at the stars, the stars existed. In a universe without kingdoms, flags, or names to celebrate victory, countless worlds drifted through the darkness. One day, someone would call one small world among them home. Some would give their lives for that land, and others would seek to burn the universe to claim it. However, the story of Azeroth begins before the footsteps of any army, for deep beneath the earth, a being that had not yet awakened was growing.
Chapter 1 · Light and Shadow Had No Borders
In the Warcraft universe, Light and Void do not simply refer to day and night. The cosmology of the Chronicle explains these two forces as fundamental powers that are both opposed and bound in a cosmic relationship. The realm of pure power exists outside the reality where we set foot, but its traces and effects permeate reality. Light manifests as Holy magic, and Void manifests as Shadow magic. Behind the shining spells and dark whispers seen on the battlefield later, there is an order that far exceeds the lifespan of any individual.

What must be remembered here first is the distinction between the names of the powers and the choices made by the beings who use them. This series does not pre-determine that a character using Light is always righteous, or that all beings wielding darkness share the same purpose. Which power one reaches for and what one does with that power are different questions. When reading about characters from thousands of years later, one must hold both these questions together. The passion to uphold a belief can save someone, or it can become a justification to suppress another.
There is no guarantee that the space reached by starlight is safe. If one tries to understand the wars of this world only through visible brightness and darkness, one will miss the disguises of ancient enemies and the tragedies born from good intentions. The history of the Guardians, the Legion, priests, and mages that will appear hereafter is the process of these strange cosmic forces entering concrete lives.
Chapter 2 · That Which Grows and That Which Fades
Life and Death touch the fate of every living being. Life manifests as nature magic that encourages growth and restoration, while the power of Death is connected to necromancy. The forest covering its wounds and extending new branches, and the dead moving once more, are the actions of different forces lying beneath the same surface. However, this distinction does not mean that every place and inhabitant of the afterlife is explained by a single chart. The journey of souls revealed later in the Shadowlands will be examined separately alongside the confirmed events of that era.

The grand history of Azeroth repeatedly passes through moments where living beings try to avoid death and moments where dead beings are called back. Instead of knowing all the results from the beginning, we will follow what the characters of each era sought to protect. The desire not to lose family and the responsibility to protect a kingdom can be small, human starting points. However, when that desire touches a great power, the scale of the result may not be equal to the scale of the desire.
Chapter 3 · The Precision of Order, The Price of Disorder
The power of Order is connected to Arcane magic. The Arcane is not a safe toy that is easily tamed; it is an energy that requires precise focus and control. The Disorder that opposes it manifests as destructive Fel magic and possesses a dangerous nature that draws power from life. This difference is not a distinction for memorizing the colors of spells. It is the first key to reading how civilizations exploring magic and demonic armies obtain and use power in different ways.

The explanation that a power is connected to Order is not a verdict that all decisions made by every ruler wielding that power are correct. In the journey of this book, we will examine the act of protecting civilization and the freedom of the protected beings together. Conversely, when explaining the destructiveness of Disorder, we will not simply list the names of demons and wars without cause. We will follow what price that power demands from whom, and whether the person paying the price had a choice.
Cosmology is not a manual that pushes away the stories of characters. It is a background that informs the scale of the power a character must bear. When a small choice connects to the fate of a distant star, one must be able to understand why that choice is fearful.
Chapter 4 · A Name No One Has Called Yet, Azeroth
Titans are massive cosmic beings. Official lore introductions describe them as planet-sized beings made of the magic of Order and primordial matter. The Pantheon searched the universe, looking for world-souls that would become their kin. Apart from their long search, a new world was forming in a remote place. The world-soul growing inside it would later be called Azeroth.

This fact alone changes the perspective on future history. Azeroth is not just a land that armies fight to possess. There is a being asleep within the land itself. Beneath the coastlines and mountain ranges, far deeper than the foundations of cities, the soul of the world grows. Protecting the land means protecting city walls in some eras, but from an older perspective, it means protecting a future that has not yet awakened.
Therefore, the first stage of this series is not a human palace or an orc fortress. It is a planet that had no king with a name. Although the history of countless races will be layered upon this star in the future, we must first look at the foundation of all those stories. The potential a world possesses invites external interest, and the effort to protect the world turns into a fight over that potential.
Chapter 5 · The Surface of a World That Lost Its Balance
On the young surface of Azeroth, the elements of fire, water, earth, and air were active. The power to remember alongside them is Spirit. Spirit is the primordial force that connects beings and is the key to understanding the balance of the elements. The Chronicle explains that as Azeroth's world-soul grew, it drew in much of the Spirit, and as a result, the elements lost their balance and fell into chaos.

If one had viewed the young star from afar, it might have looked like a beautiful light. However, the surface was not a tranquil home. It was an era where flames overturned the earth, and water, wind, and stone revealed their respective powers. There was no one yet to watch these storms and record the myths. What remains for us is the appearance of a distant era conveyed by later lore materials. Therefore, this scene is not embellished with anyone's actual eyewitness account or unverified dialogue.
The Age of the Elements is the starting point for understanding the Elemental Lords and the Black Empire that will appear next. After reading about those ancient conflicts sufficiently, we will examine why the Pantheon and the Titan-forged intervened in this world, either directly or indirectly. The power that creates the world and the power that seeks to preserve it did not move in the same direction from the beginning. Azeroth was not a finished paradise from the moment of its birth.
Chapter 6 · How to Read This Journey
This first volume follows the main story of cosmic forces and ancient history. In later volumes, we will read the events of wars, kingdoms, games, and expansions in chronological order. In the Characters/Factions section, we will examine the lives and conflicts remaining behind the scenes of the main story, and in the Lore Commentary section, we will delve deeper into magic, time, language, cities, and daily life. Terminology will be contrasted between Korean names and the original text. World-soul, Pantheon, Void, Arcane, Fel, and Spirit are the starting terms for this installment.

Explanations written in one period and information revealed in subsequent works are connected by distinguishing the time of verification. Just because one has read the charts in Chronicle Volume I does not mean one has verified the cosmology of the latest expansion that has not yet been investigated. The table of contents for the first installment currently released shows only the actually posted articles. We do not link unfinished character or lore sections as if they were already readable.
Thus, step by step, we enter the world that gained a name from an unnamed star. Right now, it is the power of the elements that shakes the surface of Azeroth. However, elsewhere in the universe, the history of great beings who would choose a different path than this sleeping world was in motion. The next main installment will follow the Pantheon's search and the transition surrounding Sargeras, contrasting them with official materials. We continue the journey toward the dark reason why the potential of a single star connects to the wars of the universe.
