Vengeance Route · The Name Immersed in Shakan

Spoiler Notice: This series covers the Canon of Creation and Canon of Vengeance in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, including the six major endings. Both paths and their respective endings are distinct alternatives. This is not a transcription of the original game's dialogue or a novelization, but an original commentary and critique that interprets character choices and emotions based on major events. Unstated inner thoughts are distinguished as interpretations, and illustrations are AI reconstructions based on public materials.

Shakan is the coldest and most static place in the Canon of Vengeance of Shin Megami Tensei V. It is not merely a sanctuary for angels, but a massive prison that has concealed the truth under the pretext of maintaining the world's order. The moment the protagonist steps inside at Mastema's behest, the player confronts the cruel history hidden behind the mask of divinity. Examining how the fragments of memory held by the character Yoko are reconstructed at the heart of this sanctuary, and how that shakes the fate of the world, is the core of this journey. At this point, where the boundaries between order and chaos collapse, we are forced to ponder what we must choose.

Shakan is a static space that contrasts with the desolation of Da'at, functioning like a massive prison that has hidden the truth under the guise of protecting order. While known as a sanctuary for angels, it is, in reality, a closed facility that preserves and manages the mechanisms necessary to maintain the Creator's authority. This place, which the protagonist enters at Mastema's request, is connected to the power source of Shekinah Glory and is off-limits to anyone other than angels. Yoko heads here to reclaim the part of herself sealed away by the Creator 18 years ago, and the player faces the deceptive structure of the world hidden behind the mask of divinity head-on.

The Holy of Holies, Shakan, is closely linked to the power source of Shekinah Glory. This suggests that the laws forming the foundation of the world are artificially maintained, and the reason for the strict access control is to hide the secret of the origin of those laws. As the player traverses this closed space, they realize how fragile and artificial the world order we knew was. The structure of this place reveals that divinity is by no means synonymous with goodness.

Mastema acts as a very interesting catalyst within this complex narrative. He guides the protagonist to Shakan, inducing cracks in the existing order by having them step into a realm inaccessible even to angels. His actions are difficult to explain through a binary of good and evil. Whether he intends to destroy order or reveal current contradictions to establish a greater order, the player is constantly left to suspect and explore his intentions. His intervention is the key driving force that maintains the tension of the narrative.

In the process of exploring Shakan, the player faces an ethical dilemma. If the power supporting the world was obtained at the cost of someone's sacrifice and sealing, is it truly just to maintain that power? Yoko's act of reclaiming her lost part is both an act of personal vengeance and a revolution that denies the foundation of the world. The conflict arising from this makes us rethink the essence of the world we wish to protect, going beyond simply defeating enemies. The proposition that maintaining order is justice is shaken here.

The visually depicted landscape of Shakan is filled with gravity-defying corridors and a feast of dazzling light. However, that splendor is somehow empty, and deep darkness lurks behind it. This is an excellent metaphor for how a system that appears perfect on the outside is being eaten away from the inside. The player is tasked with finding the truth hidden behind the facade, without being seduced by the brilliant light while moving through this space. The space itself visually represents the theme of the narrative.

Yoko was not merely an assistant who joined this journey. She stands at the center of the narrative as a victim who was a goddess guiding creation but was sealed and stripped of her rights by a Creator who would not relinquish the throne. The process of her recovering her memories through her relationship with Lilith and reclaiming her part in Shakan is a narrative of restoring a lost self, and at the same time, a declaration of direct challenge to the false order built by the Creator. Abdiel, unable to stop this, ends up fighting the protagonist, the new Nahobino, and the player watches Yoko's transformation, realizing the weight of the past she carries.

The reason the Creator sealed Yoko was that her existence threatened his absolute authority. This reflects the structure of monopoly and exclusion of power often seen in mythological narratives. As Yoko's memories are restored, she clearly recognizes who she was and why she was sealed. This realization elevates her from a mere human back to a divine being, becoming the driving force that drives the narrative of the Vengeance route even more intensely. Sacrifice for the maintenance of power inevitably invites backlash.

Abdiel is one of the most tragic figures in this narrative. She denies the fact that the order she believed in was actually built on deception and sealing, and tries to uphold her convictions to the end. Her resistance stems from blind loyalty, but at the same time, the process of that loyalty crumbling evokes deep compassion in the player. She shows the archetype of a guardian trapped in the order of the past, unable to accept a changing world. The pain of the moment her convictions collapse makes her narrative even more tragic.

The confrontation between the protagonist and Abdiel is not just a test of strength. It is the point where the protagonist, who has the potential as a new Nahobino, clashes with Abdiel's conviction to protect the old order. Abdiel risks everything to defend her beliefs, but the flow of the era is already moving in a direction different from her will. This battle conveys to the player not the thrill of victory, but a sense of sorrow for the crumbling order. The essence of the confrontation is a clash of beliefs, which is an important turning point that determines the direction of the world.

The moment Yoko regains her power, she is no longer a victim of the past, but a subject who will decide a new future. Her choice poses an ethical question about what to do with the entire world, including the people of the present. This forces one to stand at a fundamental crossroads of whether to create a new world or destroy the existing one, going beyond simply completing vengeance. The player joins Yoko's decision and bears the weight together. Her awakening signifies the reorganization of the world.
