Emil's Manor and the Five-Year Absence

Spoiler notice: This installment covers the village attack late in NieR Replicant's boyhood section, Kainé's petrification, and the truth of the underground facility five years later. The first manor visit and Emil's transformation occur at different times. The progression is explained without reproducing character dialogue or official novels.

Yonah asks her brother to help a friend with whom she has exchanged letters. Following that request, the party visits the manor in the Southern Plains. Sebastian, the butler who receives them, leads them inside and asks them to wait, but the party becomes separated in the large house and investigates its locked rooms and corridors. The boy they meet there is Emil. He lives blindfolded, afraid of the power that turns those he looks at to stone. It is not a skill learned to hurt others, but an ability that makes meeting someone's gaze dangerous in itself.

The manor is large, but its size does not mean free companionship for Emil. The boy lives with the inability to control a power that makes facing people and forming relationships dangerous. Where Kainé has been pushed out of her community because of her body and origins, Emil faces the possibility of injuring someone else. They are not repetitions of the same history: different circumstances have made living among others difficult for each of them.

The party acquires keys, opens locked areas, and goes farther inside. Emil also petrifies Shades along the way. They can shatter the stone enemies, but that usefulness does not mean he no longer fears his power. In the study, they fight the red grimoire, Grimoire Rubrum. Kainé joins while they break through floating pages and barriers to attack the book itself. Traveling with Weiss, the protagonist defeats another book as an enemy and gains a new Sealed Verse.

After the battle, they obtain a document containing a clue to reversing Emil's condition. Its unreadable cipher prevents its immediate use as treatment. Sebastian undertakes the deciphering, and the protagonist's party returns to the village. Emil's problem remains a possibility of a solution rather than a completed cure. Defeating the book does not instantly change the blindfolded boy's life. His later visit to the village and the party's return to the manor after a much longer interval both follow from the problem left unresolved here.

For Emil, meeting them offers an experience in which the fear caused by his ability does not determine every human relationship. Kainé confronts his belief that his eyes make him a monster, and the protagonist does not simply treat him as a threat to be abandoned. He begins to connect with the group as the blindfolded Emil. That relationship gives his later decision to use his power for Kainé significance beyond a convenient magical solution.

2. The Enormous Shade That Invades the Village

Having acquired powers and companions on the journey does not keep home and village permanently safe. Shades attack, and an enormous enemy pushes in, turning the residents' living spaces into a battlefield. Having carried out villagers' requests in other regions, the protagonist must now fight to protect the village where he and Yonah lived. The danger he saw in other settlements has entered his home.

The battle against the giant Shade Jack of Hearts does not finish after bringing down its large body once. As it moves and the threat continues, the party must respond all the way to the library where the residents have taken refuge. The place where he normally receives work from Popola and obtains information becomes a shelter. The invasion therefore goes beyond damage to buildings. The very foundation where they rested and prepared for the next journey is endangered.

The fight continues inside the library after the struggle against the giant body. Emil helps, and the protagonist and Kainé push the remaining threat down into the basement. Trapping the enemy below and closing the door, however, does not complete a permanent seal. Kainé must hold back an opponent capable of forcing its way out. Instead of relief that everyone is together, the immediate situation leaves tension over whether the door will be breached.

During this confrontation, Grimoire Noir and the Shadowlord appear. The journey to restore Weiss's memories and power turns into an encounter with another book that seems to understand its own purpose. Noir demands that Weiss join with him. The scene reveals a purpose unknown to the protagonist and Weiss behind their collection of Sealed Verses. Listening to Noir, Weiss also carries his experiences with the protagonist and the others so far.

Noir's summons throws Weiss into confusion, and the protagonist must fight without the familiar magic he has lost. Kainé urges Weiss not to turn away from the people with whom he has traveled. Instead of merging obediently with Noir, he returns to fighting alongside his companions. As the protagonist attacks Noir, the powers of the Sealed Verses become available again. The purpose for which Weiss was made collides with the relationships he has formed on the journey.

Yet the party cannot learn everything or protect Yonah during this encounter. The Shadowlord takes her away. On top of the journey through multiple regions to treat her, the protagonist now faces the need to recover his sister herself. The problem of an illness whose source and adversary he barely understood becomes connected with pursuing the enemy who took her. The Shadowlord's identity and his own reasons for wanting Yonah will be revealed later.

The village's crisis continues after Yonah disappears. The Shade pushed into the basement tries to emerge again. Closing the door cannot guarantee it will stay below. Protecting those in the library and gaining time and strength for the group requires an actual means of sealing the passage. Kainé chooses to block it with her own body.

She does not become stone through an enemy's accidental strike. Knowing her position and Emil's ability can hold the door, she demands to be petrified. His power to turn others into stone has normally been the fear keeping him from closeness. Now someone he has come to care about asks him to make her stone instead of saving her from that fate. Kainé's choice exists alongside the pain Emil must bear in carrying it out.

Emil petrifies Kainé, and her body seals the library basement. She remains there as stone rather than being declared dead and buried. For the protagonist, the loss of being able to speak with a companion follows his sister's abduction. Emil, having already used his power, must now find whether it can be undone. Saving the village leaves one person's time fixed in place.

The problems left to the two boys are connected. The protagonist must locate Yonah, and Emil must reverse Kainé's petrification. Solving one cannot automatically bring back the other companion. Strength and clues are needed to open a route to Yonah; bringing Kainé out of stone requires Emil to understand more of the power he cannot control. The party enters a long interval with these questions unresolved.

Five years pass. The protagonist has grown from a boy into a young man, but Yonah has still not been recovered. His changed body shows time passing, while the sister he seeks remains absent. Fighting Shades outside the village continues. Unlike the past, when he left his sick sister at home, the house now holds her absence.

Kainé remains petrified, maintaining the seal over the basement. Five years have allowed the protagonist's body to grow and the world to change, while hers stays bound to that spot. He cannot share the day's events with her or ask her to come out with them tomorrow. Time continues with a former traveling companion inside the village yet unable to answer. Emil's search for an answer to his own powers carries the desire to end this condition.

News of Emil reaches the protagonist through Popola. Emil reports a facility beneath his manor connected to his powers, offering the possibility of finding a way to undo petrification. Unlike the upper house they visited the first time, they must now descend underground toward Emil's own origins. The search to save one companion becomes an investigation of the past that made another's body.

The protagonist returns to the manor and enters the underground facility with Emil. It is not simply an extension of the house's living rooms and corridors, but an experimental installation where they must unlock areas, inspect records, and go deeper. The explanation for his power and his life avoiding other people's gazes cannot be found in his personality alone. Below remains a project that altered human bodies for someone else's purposes.

5. Emil's Sister, Experimental Weapon No. 6

Deep in the facility, they encounter Experimental Weapon No. 6. This enormous being is Emil's older sister, Halua. The siblings were used in weapon-making experiments, and she acquired a form far removed from a human body. Emil has not simply found a monster and arbitrarily imagined it to be his sister. His own body and powers are connected to the experiments here and to his sealed sister's existence.

His petrification ability acquires another meaning. The power that has long made meeting other people's eyes safely so difficult relates to the role assigned to him to suppress the experimental weapon. Having known only that he could hurt people, the boy recovers the history of why that power became his. At the same time, finding a way to restore Kainé requires facing the sister who became a weapon long ago.

Emil seeks a way to control his ability by taking Halua's power into himself. This is no repair completed merely by having the protagonist fetch a needed object outside. Emil must enter the danger of merging with his sister, and the protagonist fights Halua during the process. The search begun to save Kainé confronts him with another family member and his own body at once.

At the end of the battle, Emil gains power but cannot retain his previous boyish appearance. His body becomes skeletal, revealing a large, round skull face. The appearance familiar from Automata and the series' imagery is not the ordinary face he had while first visiting the village. It is the transformation he undergoes after descending underground to find the power to reverse his companion's petrification. Gaining strength and losing his boyhood body are outcomes of the same moment.

Emil is distressed by his appearance. The protagonist accepts him as Emil rather than rejecting him as another being because his looks have changed. Having formed a relationship without fearing his eyes, the party now faces whether it can treat him as the same companion after his entire body changes. Their acceptance does not require a human-looking body as the condition of friendship, helping him return with the strength to recover Kainé.

The party returns to the village with the newly empowered Emil. In the library where Kainé still stands, the choice from five years ago remains a physical seal. Emil can now reverse it. But the reason she blocked the door has not disappeared as well. The enemy confined below means that lifting the seal must be followed by dealing with the threat released behind it.

Kainé is freed from stone, and the group faces the enormous Shade again. Previously they had to leave her as a seal to protect the village; now they resume the battle they could not finish then. The grown protagonist, Emil with his transformed body, and the restored Kainé stand in the same fight. The years the two boys endured with their companion petrified lead, through this scene, back into a relationship that can move forward together.

For Kainé, the protagonist's growth marks the time she missed. Emil's transformed appearance also occurred while she could not be there. The group does not simply resume the old adventure unchanged. The protagonist pursues the Yonah he has not recovered in five years; Emil gained the power to save Kainé at the cost of his body; she returns to a time in which her companions have changed. Each has passed through a different experience of those years.

The protagonist gives the returning Kainé a Lunar Tear. Even after the joy of reunion, however, there is no place for the companions to stay together in the village. Popola says Kainé and Emil must remain outside because of their appearances. He protests, but cannot change every resident's attitude on the spot. Kainé, who saved the village, and Emil, whose body changed to restore her, are left unable to rest inside that very settlement.

Outside, the protagonist apologizes to them and intends to try persuading the villagers again. His treating them as companions matters to Kainé and Emil, but the words alone do not give them the right to cross the gates. They head onward under conditions that permit fighting together but not staying together. Emil's continued decisions to help people later cannot be understood as those of someone who never suffered this rejection.

The reunited party's next objective is to reach the Shadowlord. Knowing that Yonah was abducted does not open his doors. The protagonist must find the key fragments that allow passage to the castle. The road takes him back to places visited in boyhood, where people who have lived through the same five years await. The brothers at the Junk Heap, the masked prince, and the Aerie's circumstances have not remained as they were on the day he left.
