1. The Big Score Plan · Two Approaches to the Same Target

Behind the office at the Vanilla Unicorn, Lester Crest gathers Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton, and Trevor Philips to brief them on the heist of the Union Depository, the biggest target in Los Santos. Although Trevor displays strong hostility toward Michael, viewing him as a traitor, he acknowledges that Michael's skills are essential for this massive job and agrees to a temporary truce. Franklin also joins the tense standoff, asserting that he never leaked any secrets. Lester mediates their conflict and presents two opposing approaches on the planning board.
The first alternative proposed by Lester is the 'Subtle Approach.' This involves intercepting armored cash transport trucks, disguising the crew as guards, and entering the vault as if performing a routine collection. To execute this route, the team must hijack a police transport to secure stinger spike strips and steal and modify three high-performance Bravado Gauntlets to transport the gold. Lester emphasizes that while this method appears clean, it requires precise coordination and perfect disguise skills from the crew.
The second alternative is the 'Obvious Approach.' This is a bold method involving a loud shootout at the front of the bank to distract the police while using a drill to breach the vault wall through a construction tunnel. Afterward, the gold is to be airlifted by helicopter and transferred to a freight train. Lester clarifies that these two routes are mutually exclusive and cannot be executed simultaneously, explaining that a single choice will completely change the entire flow and required equipment for the heist.
The composition of the heist crew is a key factor directly linked to the success or failure of the operation. Depending on who is hired as the gunman, driver, and hacker, the loss rate of the gold and the safety of the escape route vary significantly. Lester compares the proficiency of each candidate and their requested cut in detail, warning that hiring unproven personnel could lead to dropped gold during transport or vehicle damage during the escape, drastically reducing total profits.
Especially when choosing the Subtle Approach, the hacker's ability plays a decisive role during the escape. The hacker must control Los Santos' traffic signal system in real-time to ensure the getaway vehicles do not have to stop at intersections. The driver determines the speed of loading the gold and the stability during the escape, while the gunman is responsible for handling unexpected situations inside the vault and repelling enemy forces.
The three men divide their roles and, following Lester's instructions, begin the preparations for the chosen route. Since they cannot rob the same vault twice, they must choose only one timeline and stake everything on it. The countdown to the largest crime in the history of Los Santos begins, and the group scatters across the city to secure the necessary equipment and vehicles.
2. Stingers and Gauntlets · Preparing for the Subtle Approach

Having finalized the Subtle Approach, the group first begins the task of securing the special equipment needed to neutralize the armored trucks. Michael infiltrates the Davis police station parking lot to hijack a police transport vehicle. Inside the back of this transport is a stinger device capable of instantly shredding the tires of a moving vehicle. Michael avoids police detection and safely moves the vehicle to a hideout located behind the Vanilla Unicorn, under the Olympic Freeway.
Once the stinger is secured, Lester identifies the locations of three high-performance Bravado Gauntlets to be used for the escape and emails the information to Franklin. The data sent by Lester includes photos and approximate locations of the Gauntlets parked throughout Los Santos. Based on these clues, Franklin roams the city to find and steal the abandoned Gauntlets one by one.
Franklin immediately takes the stolen Gauntlets to Los Santos Customs to perform comprehensive modifications suitable for the operation. Since these vehicles must carry the immense weight of the gold and break through police pursuit, upgrading the engine output to its limit and reinforcing the chassis with bulletproof plating is essential. Franklin repeats the process of stealing and upgrading each of the three vehicles before bringing them to the hideout.
Once all vehicle modifications are complete and the three Gauntlets are gathered at the hideout, Lester provides a detailed briefing on the escape route. During the escape, the hacker will infiltrate the Los Santos traffic signal network to control the lights at intersections in real-time as the Gauntlets pass through. The more skilled the hacker, the shorter the signal delay, allowing the crew to exit the city before the police cordon tightens.
In this preparation process, equipment for the Obvious Approach, such as the drill or the freight train, is not considered at all. The Subtle route relies entirely on precise timing, perfect disguise, and a swift escape. The stinger-equipped transport will be used to stop the targets, and the modified Gauntlets will be the core means of loading the gold and disappearing into the tunnels.
With all preparations perfectly set at the hideout, Lester has the crew perform a final check of the operation's timeline. The drivers of each vehicle memorize their positions and escape routes, while the gunmen prepare for any contingencies that might arise inside the vault. All physical preparations to open the heavy vault door of the Union Depository are complete, leaving only the execution.
3. The Big Score · Transporting Gold Disguised as Guards

On the morning of the operation, the group blocks the path of two armored transport trucks inside a tunnel leading to the Union Depository. After laying the pre-prepared stingers on the road to pop the trucks' tires, they neutralize the panicked guards with firearms. The team quickly changes the tires, dons the pre-prepared Gruppe 6 guard uniforms, and boards the transports. They threaten Casey, one of the subdued guards, to force his cooperation in the operation.
Perfectly disguised as fake transport personnel, Michael and Trevor use Casey to enter the underground parking lot of the Union Depository. The bank's security chief confirms Casey's face and leads them to the vault without suspicion. The heavy vault door opens, and the group faces the massive amount of gold bars stacked high inside.
The gunmen and drivers begin the task of quickly loading the gold onto trolleys and moving it to the transport trucks. The speed of this task depends on the proficiency of the hired crew members; those with insufficient skills may drop gold on the floor, causing a loss in total profit. Once the loading is safely completed, Michael keeps his word, releases Casey unharmed in a safe location, and exits the bank.
However, the moment the transport trucks leave the bank and head toward the location where the getaway vehicles are waiting, Merryweather mercenaries arrive, and the situation changes drastically. Realizing that information has leaked, the group immediately establishes a defensive line and engages in a fierce shootout. Michael, Trevor, and Franklin hold off the onslaught of Merryweather forces while desperately protecting the transports loaded with gold.
After neutralizing all enemies, the group transfers the gold from the transports to the three pre-prepared Gauntlet vehicles. Even during this process, gold loss can occur depending on the crew's stats. As soon as loading is finished, the group boards their respective Gauntlets and speeds into the heart of Los Santos. At this point, the hacker controls the traffic signals at intersections in real-time, helping the group evade police pursuit without stopping.
As the police cordon tightens, the group enters a highway tunnel and drives the Gauntlets one by one into the cargo holds of two large trailer trucks waiting inside. As the truck doors close and they naturally exit the tunnel, the pursuing police completely lose their targets. If an unskilled driver was hired, a disaster might occur during this escape where vehicles are damaged or crew members are killed, resulting in the loss of massive amounts of gold, but with a skilled crew, the gold is safely transported to the destination.
4. The Price of Silence · Until the Gold is Divided

The operation ends successfully as the getaway trucks arrive at a safe hideout in the outskirts. Lester begins the complex process of money laundering and disposal to convert the massive amount of stolen gold into cash. While the gold taken from the Union Depository has immense value on its own, Lester's underground connections and thorough security measures are essential to circulate it into the market without being traced.
In this process, many often confuse the total target amount with the actual individual profit the crew members receive. The total value of the gold stolen from the Union Depository reaches approximately 200 million dollars, but this is merely a number symbolizing the massive scale of the heist. The actual distributed amount is the remainder after paying the hired crew's shares, Lester's commission, and money laundering costs.
Each crew member receives compensation based on their role and the pre-agreed percentage, with the final amount determined within a fixed maximum profit limit per person. If gold was dropped due to an unskilled crew member during the heist or if vehicles were damaged during the escape, the final profit is reduced by that loss. Lester finishes all calculations and transfers each person's share to their respective accounts.
After the large sum of money is deposited, Lester strongly advises the three men to leave Los Santos for a while and keep a low profile. However, the repercussions of this massive crime do not fade easily. Corrupt FIB agents like Steve Haines and powerful figures like Devin Weston still hold the leash on them, and obtaining the gold does not guarantee peace in their lives.
The series of events described so far is the timeline that unfolds when the three men choose the 'Subtle Approach' from Lester's proposals. There is also an 'Obvious Approach' method to rob the Union Depository, which involves drilling through construction tunnels and airlifting the gold with a helicopter. Since the two routes are mutually exclusive alternatives, one cannot experience both methods in a single heist.
In the next chapter, we will cover the story of the 'Obvious Approach' timeline, which targets the same Union Depository but requires much rougher risks using completely different equipment and tactics. Behind the sense of accomplishment from pulling off the big score, conflicts intertwined with each of their pasts remain unresolved, casting a heavy tension over the night streets of Los Santos.
