Spoiler Notice: This is a commentary series covering major events, companion stories, branching paths, and endings of the main game and Phantom Liberty. Each ending is the result of different choices and does not all happen at once. I do not transcribe original dialogue or reenact every scene. Unstated inner thoughts are distinguished as interpretations. AI illustrations are symbolic reconstructions, and V's appearance, gender, and relationships vary depending on the playthrough.

The path of asking Panam and the Aldecaldos for help is based on the trust built with the community. It is not a reward automatically granted because you romanced someone. Following their related stories and bearing each other's risks makes the final choice possible. Instead of a path to elevate an individual's name in the city, V places their survival within the decisions of many.

The operation toward Arasaka entails actual sacrifice. The community, including Saul, pays the price, and even after defeating the enemy, those people do not return. If you describe the Star ending as happiness without any cost, this loss disappears. Saying that family helps does not mean the lives of family members are less important. The reason this path is both warm and heavy is that it accepts those risks not as someone else's business, but as a collective choice.

When V returns to their own body, it leads to the Star ending, leaving Night City with the Aldecaldos. The issue of remaining lifespan is not confirmed to be resolved. There is hope relying on connections and possibilities outside the city, but the result of a complete cure is not revealed. Depending on relationships and choices, there are differences such as whether a lover leaves together or stays behind. It cannot be said that the same companion and future are guaranteed for every V.

Nevertheless, the light felt in this ending does not come solely from the change in the lifespan number. It is because V has changed the criteria for success. They choose time with people who remember them over a name the city will remember. This change can be read not as a defeat that abandons ambition, but as a choice to redefine by whose standards life is evaluated. The fact that there is someone to face an uncertain future with creates a different kind of hope than a certain cure.

Chapter 2 · The body left behind, the people left behind

The direction of leaving the body to Johnny in Mikoshi can lead to the Temperance ending. Whether it is Rogue's path, the Aldecaldos' path, or the secret raid, the process of reaching Mikoshi may differ, but the final choice of existence is the core of this ending. V goes to the digital realm with Alt, and Johnny lives on in the body. It cannot be concluded that V has become completely happy and lives forever, or that they were simply erased without meaning. One must acknowledge the ontological uncertainty the game leaves behind.

Johnny's appearance as he leaves the city shows an attitude different from the past. Rather than shouting his name louder, he asks how he will use his remaining life. His consideration and commemorative actions toward a young person are small traces showing what he learned from V. However, the fact that Johnny has grown does not offset the loss felt by V and those who were waiting for V. Someone's new beginning can be a door closed without explanation to someone else.

The messages from characters waiting for contact expand the ending from V's personal calculation to the result of relationships. The right to make one's own decisions and the right of those left behind to grieve exist simultaneously. If you organize these scenes as a farewell where everything is understood, the pain of the work diminishes. It is important that V hears what they meant to the other person through the other person's voice, albeit belatedly.

The main game also contains a separate tragic choice where V stops fighting and ends their life. I do not reenact the specific method or romanticize it as liberation or heroic sacrifice. It is an ending that shows this decision does not remain with one isolated person through the shock and sadness of those left behind. This is why, when comparing the endings, survival, self-determination, relationships, and hope are not combined into a single ranking of good endings.
