Spoiler Warning: This is a commentary series covering major events, companion stories, branching paths, and endings of the main game and Phantom Liberty. Each ending is the result of different choices and does not all happen at once. I do not transcribe original dialogue or reenact every scene. Unstated inner thoughts are distinguished as interpretations. AI illustrations are symbolic reconstructions, and V's appearance, gender, and relationships vary depending on the playthrough.

In Pacifica, V makes contact with the Voodoo Boys. Placide and Brigitte do not treat outsiders as members of their community. Their goal is not simply to give a mercenary a job, but to connect with entities beyond the Blackwall. The history of a region abandoned by investment and public protection provides a clue to understanding their distrust, but it does not justify treating V as a disposable tool.

The choice to get involved with NetWatch at the Grand Imperial Mall makes this conflict clear. An agency that speaks of information security has its own agenda, and a group that speaks of community survival can easily calculate the value of an outsider's life. Discovering one side's lies does not make the other side's explanation entirely true. V must judge whose conduit they are being used as. Depending on which side is chosen, the fate of the Voodoo Boys and subsequent conflicts will change.

The Blackwall is not a wall in physical space, but a boundary separating the old network and artificial intelligence that are difficult to control. It is a device that maintains safety, but for those who covet the power beyond the boundary, it becomes a door that must be crossed. In this context, knowledge of technology is power. Even if V can become physically stronger, they do not know all the rules of the network. Vulnerabilities that cannot be solved with a gun reappear.

If you view the people of this region only as exotic horror decorations, you miss the core of the story. What matters is who cannot trust the existing order and why, and what kind of violence that distrust breeds. Even excluded groups can draw lines between the inside and outside to sacrifice someone. This work does not combine the history of being a victim with the responsibility of the choices made in the present.

Alt, whom Johnny and V meet beyond the Blackwall, cannot be fully explained by the label of a former human lover. Alt presents the possibility of separating V and Johnny, and provides the direction that they must approach Arasaka's Mikoshi to execute it. Mikoshi is a space where digitized personality information is stored and controlled. Here, the cure expands from a simple matter of going to a hospital to remove a chip, to a problem where an individual's existence is intertwined with a corporation's data system.

To Johnny, Alt is someone toward whom regret is directed. However, the fact that Alt does not respond to Johnny's emotional expectations in the same way is important. If you try to define a person in the present based on past intimacy, you erase the time that person has changed. The reason one feels a chill in this relationship is that one cannot easily conclude that Alt lacks humanity. It is possible that human language simply cannot fully contain that existence.

For V, the proposal is hope, but not a guaranteed salvation. Being separated from Johnny, returning to one's own body, and maintaining one's original life are different goals. One must make these distinctions to understand what promises were kept and what remained in the end. The technical solution Alt provides is not identical to the recovery of all the meanings V desires.

The map of survival changes depending on the path taken through Pacifica. The path of asking a mega-corporation for help and the path of infiltrating that system diverge, and Johnny in V's head becomes both the cause of the problem and the connection point that makes access possible. Sometimes, people can only move to the next stage through the very relationships they most want to escape. This uncomfortable dependency makes subsequent choices with companions weigh even heavier.
