Spoiler Notice: This is a commentary series covering major events, companion stories, branches, and endings of the main game and Phantom Liberty. Each ending is the result of different choices and does not all happen at once. I do not transcribe original dialogue or reenact every scene. Unstated inner thoughts are distinguished as interpretations. AI illustrations are symbolic reconstructions, and V's appearance, gender, and relationships vary depending on the playthrough.

The path to finding Anders Hellman, who was involved in the development of the Relic, leads through Rogue to Panam Palmer. Panam is in conflict with the Aldecaldos and is trying to recover her vehicle and lost work. While she appears to be a helper who showed up to suit V's problems, she already has a life in progress. Two people with different needs begin a deal, and as that deal repeats, their attitudes toward each other change.

The operation to track the Kang Tao transport involves great risk to get the information V wants. In the process, Panam's community also suffers damage. For V, it is a matter of curing one person, while for others, it is a matter of the lives of family and colleagues. The fact that my problem is desperate does not give me the right to demand the same priority from the other person. When recognizing this gap, Panam's anger and sense of responsibility do not look like reactions caused simply by a hasty personality.

Hellman explains more about how the Relic works but cannot offer the simple removal method V hopes for. The fact that the device has altered V's body makes the relationship between Johnny and V look like a technical emergency again. The fact that there is a developer is different from the fact that he can reverse all the results. Corporate innovation is introduced with grand words, but the answer returned to an individual in an exceptional situation can be surprisingly cold.

The Badlands are not a paradise of freedom unrelated to the city. Corporate supply chains, armed forces, and contracts to make a living reach there as well. Yet, when the sky widens, the player feels other possibilities. Beyond raising one's name value inside a giant building, isn't there a way to build a life? Panam's story turns this sense into promises with specific people.

Chapter 2: Conflict with Saul, choosing one's affiliation again

In Panam's optional missions, the process of saving Saul and securing the Basilisk follows. Saul values careful deals for the survival of the community, and Panam fears that such caution could eventually lead to subordination. It is difficult to divide them into one being responsible and the other being reckless. Both try to protect people, but their judgments on what constitutes a greater risk differ.

When Panam gets angry, one can also read a desire to be recognized within it. If the community she is trying to protect does not trust her judgment, backlash and affection can emerge from the same words. However, this is an interpretation of behavior, not a fixed psychological diagnosis. The way V participates in that process becomes a test of how to treat a companion. Do you only receive help when needed, or do you make time to return during the other's crisis?

The neural connection of the Basilisk creates a contrast with the forced coexistence of Johnny and V. Even if there is a technical similarity in sharing senses, the meaning of the relationship changes according to consent and situation. A romance with Panam is established only when conditions are met and chosen, and the path of receiving help from the Aldecaldos should not be explained only as a reward for romance. Friendship and community trust also have their own independent narratives.

The fact that this community can help V later is the result of an accumulated relationship. That does not mean the help comes for free. The risk actually falls on someone. The word 'family' is not a permission to sacrifice others, but closer to a promise to decide together even while knowing each other's risks. When V calls for help someday, these times give weight to those words.
