Chapters in this story
Spoiler Notice: This is a commentary series covering major events, companion stories, branches, and endings of the main game and Phantom Liberty. Each ending is the result of different choices and does not all happen at once. It does not transcribe original dialogue or reenact every scene. Unstated inner thoughts are distinguished as interpretations. AI illustrations are symbolic reconstructions, and V's appearance, gender, and relationships vary depending on the playthrough.
Chapter 1 · When a person who spoke of justice searches for family

The optional missions involving River Ward show how the city's public order protects and fails people. While investigating political events, V encounters the limitations and interests within the police force. River is someone who has worked within the system, but he experiences the fact that the system does not always make doing the right thing possible. His story is about what responsibility one takes when individual good intentions and organizational judgment diverge.
In The Hunt, where he searches for his nephew Randy, the fear beneath River's composure gains a concrete face. The missing person is not a number in a report, but someone who should be at the family dinner table. Reading the clues in the braindance accurately and completing the actual rescue are important, and there are consequences for failing or choosing to leave. This series does not assume that every playthrough was resolved safely. Saving him does not end with will alone; it requires careful observation and actions that stay until the end.
Even if one can understand the situation that makes River angry, there is no need to conclude that revenge is justice. Keeping to one's principles becomes more difficult when harm reaches one's own family. V is not just someone who disposes of enemies, but a companion who influences what kind of person River remains. What is important in this relationship is not a cool investigative achievement, but an attitude of not letting a desperate person judge alone.
The time spent with family afterward shows a different kind of value than the legends of a big city. Having a meal at someone's house and spending time with children may not increase V's reputation. Still, that is the substance of a living life. The romance with River is a possibility based on conditions and choices, and a friendship holds the same weight. This story deepens when one does not view ordinary time with people as merely a small reward given after battle.
Chapter 2 · If memories are changed, whose are my decisions?

The Peralez couple's Dream On breaks the appearance of stability in a different way. What V examines does not stop at simple signs of intrusion. Circumstances of surveillance and the manipulation of memory and behavior are revealed, raising the possibility that even those who gain power may not be the masters of their own judgment. The expectation that if one has money and status, one can at least protect one's own mind, collapses.
Elizabeth knows the danger and tries not to tell her husband everything. If one calls this only love or only betrayal, one misses the horror of the choice. It is a situation where one cannot be sure if informing him of the facts is protecting him or exposing him to a greater threat. However, even with the intention to protect, the issue of the other person's right to know and the substitution of their judgment remains. Because protection and control are sometimes explained with the same words, one must be more careful.
V can choose how much to tell Jefferson. However, that choice does not lead to an ending that reveals the full scope of the conspiracy and punishes all those behind it. One should not present connections to Mr. Blue Eyes or specific corporations as established facts. One must distinguish between the clues shown by the game and the theories inferred by fans. The unresolved nature of this case itself leaves a feeling with the player. It is the helplessness that one cannot control the other's future even by saying the right things.
This mission is also connected to the Relic incident. V fights against personality data that changes their body, and the Peralez couple has the reliability of their memories threatened. In both cases, the interior closest to a human becomes a workshop for external power. The freedom that Cyberpunk 2077 asks about does not stop at the freedom to move or choose weapons. It goes as far as whether the heart that I feel I want is something I truly created.
