Spoiler Warning: This is a commentary series covering major events, companion stories, branching paths, and endings of the main game and Phantom Liberty. Each ending is the result of different choices and does not all happen at once. This does not transcribe original dialogue or reenact every scene. Unstated inner thoughts are distinguished as interpretations. AI illustrations are symbolic reconstructions; V's appearance, gender, and relationships vary depending on gameplay.

Jackie Welles is a key companion in the early stages as V establishes a foothold on the streets. Judging by his physique and history of rough work, he might seem like an intimidating figure, but the tone of his conversations often moves in the opposite direction. While he talks about success, he is also thinking about his next meal and the next job to support his family. For Jackie, making a name for himself is not just about climbing to the top alone. It can be read as a yearning to bring those close to him along toward a better life.

The early mission to rescue Sandra Dorsett quickly shows the cruelty of this city. Human bodies are treated as parts and objects of trade. Trauma Team possesses powerful rescue capabilities, but their services are bound by contracts. The claim that life is precious does not align with who actually receives rescue personnel. After going through this scene, the short moments of daily life spent with Jackie become more important. When the city calculates people by price, a companion calls V someone to go home with.

Viktor Vektor and Misty support this same point in different ways. As a ripperdoc, Viktor handles V's body, but his interest does not stop at the transaction details. Misty exists not as a device that knows the whole plot through prophecy, but as someone who accepts anxiety and loss. If you read them as a small safety net, the reason V clings to dangerous promises later becomes more painful. It is not because there is nowhere to return to, but because there is a place they want to return to, yet time is running out.

The sense of speed in the beginning makes the player participate in Jackie's expectations as well. Better gear and bigger jobs feel like a better future. However, if you see Jackie only as an optimist, you miss the desperation behind his expectations. A person who wishes for a stable success that would not require dangerous work chooses even more dangerous work to achieve that very success. This contradiction is less about Jackie's personal foolishness and more about the shape of the ladder the city allows.

Chapter 2 · The Value of a Name at the Afterlife

The proposal from fixer Dexter DeShawn brings V and Jackie close to the big stage. It is a job to steal Arasaka's Relic. T-Bug handles network support, and in the preparation phase, the Flathead owned by Maelstrom and the interests of Militech become intertwined. Who you negotiate with and who you turn into an enemy here can vary. The result of a single battle should not be explained as a fixed event for all playthroughs.

While the Flathead is an operational tool, the process of obtaining it introduces the game's grammar. Even the act of handing over money can have hidden conditions, and understanding the internal power dynamics of the opponent reveals different paths. The ability to shoot well and the ability to read a situation properly are not the same thing. The choices given to V are closer to distributing risk based on incomplete information than a test to pick one correct answer.

The Afterlife gives a sense of being recognized in the mercenary world. At the same time, the culture of commemorating dead legends reveals the dangerous connection between becoming famous and surviving. There is a human joy in Jackie's excitement about that space that cannot be linked only to vanity. It is the desire of someone who has been evaluated by others to finally be recognized by his own name. One must fully understand this emotion so that later losses are not reduced to mere mission failure statistics.

Is Dex a companion who shares the risk, or a middleman who will pass the costs to someone else if things go wrong? This question is not immediately settled. The fact that the other party speaks confidently when signing a contract is not proof that they will take responsibility until the end. While rejoicing with Jackie, the player also feels this gap. They do not yet fully know that something more expensive than the item to be stolen is already being held as collateral.
