Recommended Game Story: Cyberpunk 2077 Part 9
Chapters in this story
Spoiler Warning: This is a commentary series covering major events, companion stories, branching paths, and endings of the main game and Phantom Liberty. Each ending is the result of different choices and does not all happen at once. I do not transcribe original dialogue or reenact every scene. Unstated inner thoughts are distinguished as interpretations. AI illustrations are symbolic reconstructions, and V's appearance, gender, and relationships vary depending on the playthrough.
Chapter 1 · The Gaze of Power Overlapping the Festival

Takemura intends to tell Hanako Arasaka the truth about Saburo's death. The preparation for the approach and the parade itself serve as a stage where street festivals, sophisticated security, and family power overlap on one screen. While beautiful decorations float by, V watches the same event from a different location. A space that is a spectacle for citizens is a narrow path for a witness who must survive to deliver their voice.
Oda confronts V from the position of protecting Hanako. The security he performs and V's objectives collide. One cannot explain his actions as meaningless malice simply because he appears as an enemy. It is possible to choose to spare him after the battle. While his subsequent appearances are influenced by other conditions, this choice at least leaves the player with the fact that immediate victory and ending an opponent's life are not necessarily the same thing.
Takemura's act of bringing Hanako shows his desperation that his message might be ignored. He breaks the rules of the system he is supposed to protect to prove his loyalty. That contradiction is an interesting part of Takemura. The belief that power will listen if you say the right thing clashes with the situation where you must use force to deliver the right words. V is an ally in that process, but not someone who shares the same beliefs.
The testimony Hanako hears is content that shakes the foundations of the family order. However, just because she listens does not mean she treats V as an equal negotiating partner. Taking time for a necessary witness is different from valuing that witness's life as much as one's own power. This difference continues until the final proposal. Behind the splendor of the parade, V once again becomes a small key to a larger story.
Chapter 2 · To Rescue or to Escape

After the hideout is raided, V must escape. At this point, there is a separate path to save Takemura. He does not automatically survive in every playthrough, nor is he destined to die. The choice splits between following the immediate objective and Johnny's advice to get out, and taking the risk to go back. This difference remains in some of the staging and the people encountered on the Hanako path later.
A rescue is not the same as agreeing with the corporation. V may not want to abandon someone who helped them, even while not trusting Arasaka. Conversely, just because Takemura feels indebted to V does not mean the ultimate object of his loyalty changes to V. The key to reading this relationship is that gratitude between individuals does not completely eliminate differences in political values. One must be able to carry both affection and disagreement.
Hanako approaches V again through other means, leaving a proposal that leads to a future meeting at Embers. As V's condition worsens, the language of solutions provided by a major corporation may sound more persuasive. Even if there is formal freedom of choice, bargaining power weakens when the stamina to handle alternatives diminishes. A door that seems certain to a desperate patient gives great power to the person managing that door.
From this point on, the various paths preparing for the end of the main game draw closer. However, this does not mean that the story so far has proceeded in a single fixed order. Events related to Panam, Judy, and Johnny can be experienced in a significantly different order. This series groups them for the sake of understanding. In the memory of V that the player actually creates, these events can occupy different intervals and emotional weight.
