Recommended Game Story: Cyberpunk 2077 Part 6
Chapters in this story
Spoiler Warning: This is a commentary series covering major events, companion stories, branches, and endings of the main game and Phantom Liberty. Each ending is the result of different choices and does not all happen at once. I do not transcribe original dialogue or reenact every scene. Unstated inner thoughts are distinguished as interpretations. AI illustrations are symbolic reconstructions, and V's appearance, gender, and relationships vary depending on the playthrough.
Chapter 1 · When searching for clues becomes searching for a person

V searches for Evelyn to uncover the mastermind behind the Relic incident. The pursuit, which begins at Clouds, passes through the exploitation structures of Fingers and the Scavengers. While there are traces of sexual exploitation and violence in this process, detailing those scenes is not the way to understand Evelyn's pain. What matters is how easily the fact that she is a person in need of help was erased amidst the surrounding transactions. For Judy, the search is not a secondary task to find a cure, but a mission to get her friend back.
The fact that the two have different motivations creates tension in their relationship. V is running out of time, and Judy has the fear of having to entrust Evelyn's safety to others who are in a rush. An attitude that demands information urgently can be seen by Judy as another form of exploitation. As V acts with respect for the other person, their goals partially overlap. It means that the process of finding someone should not lead to the loss of that person's dignity.
Even after being rescued, Evelyn does not recover and takes her own life. The game does not make this loss an event that is resolved just because V defeated the enemies. Judy's grief is layered with a sense of helplessness that no matter how hard she tried, it was not enough. This is an interpretation of possible emotions, not a declaration that I know everything Judy actually thought. A perspective is needed that does not consume the victim's death merely as a failed plan or a lesson.
Tracking the Voodoo Boys' involvement in the remaining records moves the plot to the next location. However, the fact that the records were obtained does not mean Evelyn was saved. Through this difference, the game allows the player to see the mission completion indicator and a person's life separately. This is also why Judy's story continues. The time of those left behind does not end just because the investigation results are out.
Chapter 2 · Power in Clouds and the hometown left under the water

Judy's optional mission leads to the issue of control for those working at Clouds. She tries to change the exploitation structure through technology and the solidarity of her colleagues. Maiko suggests a path of compromise within the organization and the ruling order. Either way, it cannot be explained that this choice solves all problems permanently. It is followed by questions of who takes over when power is left vacant, and what is sacrificed in exchange for immediate safety.
For Judy, this work is read as a more desperate attempt because Evelyn cannot be brought back. The desire to ensure that the same thing never happens again is understandable. However, desperation and feasibility are separate issues. The discomfort the game shows does not lie in mocking good intentions. It asks what preparation and responsibility are needed to connect good purposes to the actual safety of people. Depending on how V intervenes, the subsequent relationship and results also change.
In the diving mission 'Pyramid Song,' Judy shows the submerged Laguna Bend. The hometown that disappeared under the language of corporations and development remains as a memory. A place that looked like just a water surface from above is someone's childhood from below. The scene where Judy, who dealt with braindances, shares her own senses and memories reveals the possibility that recording technology is not just a means to consume others. The difference is that sharing requires consent and trust.
The relationship between Judy and V can be a friendship or a romance, depending on conditions and choices. In either case, the point is not to obtain her as a reward. It is closer to whether one can stay by the side of someone who has lost their hometown and friends so that they can decide their next life for themselves. After coming up from the water, looking at the city lights again reveals layers different from before. Beneath the glittering scenery, there are places that someone still remembers by name, submerged.
