2B’s Last Request, and the Words 9S Never Heard

Spoiler notice: This chapter follows the infected 2B after the escape from the Bunker, her meeting with A2 and her death, and what 9S witnesses before his fall. A2’s reason for acting and 9S’s reason for interpreting that action begin with different information.

1. The Fault Still Inside the Body That Landed

2B sent 9S’s flight unit away from danger and faced their pursuers alone. Her own unit was eventually damaged, and she fell to Earth. Previously, they could have expected to meet again in the Bunker after the mission or check their backups. That facility has just exploded. A separation in which neither knows where the other’s present body is, or what condition it is in, no longer takes place within the same safety net.

Having crashed in the Flooded City, she discovers the infection in her own body. Her Pod reports that the logic virus is progressing. The red eyes and hostile comrades she saw in the Bunker are no longer merely events in a distant place. Her own body can change in the same way. The sword and hands she has used to defeat enemies could hurt others against her wishes if she loses control.

2B has no immediate means of sending all her data somewhere safe and returning in a new body. Simply transferring her current, infected information would not solve the problem either. The Pod determines that the virus is changing its algorithm abnormally fast, making removal difficult. Being able to analyze her condition does not mean being able to cure it completely and restore normal operation on the spot. The gap between understanding a danger and having the power to remove it narrows the path ahead of her.

She tries to move somewhere secluded so that she will not harm anyone else. Until now, her missions have required her to run toward enemies and eliminate them. This time, she needs to take her own body away from places where others are living. Entering the camp to seek help could carry the danger to its survivors. The impulse to approach someone in order to live conflicts with the judgment that she must keep her distance to avoid hurting them.

At this point, examining the flight unit left in the Flooded City also gives her the option of recording a message for 9S. This is not a call that reaches him immediately. It is a message he may later find and hear in the abandoned unit: another form of memory left by someone who does not know whether she will return.

2. Why the Familiar City Becomes So Distant

2B makes her way toward the commercial facility. She has passed through it many times, including on the way to the forest. Heights and distances she would normally clear quickly with jumps and evasive movements now feel different. As the infection advances, her bodily functions begin to fail one after another. She tries to move, but her body no longer fully obeys her commands.

The screen and controls express this condition too. Her vision breaks up, familiar actions become restricted, and at times her body stops or staggers. As the infection level rises, she must use brief returns of function to make it across the terrain. The player is not merely watching a soldier’s crisis in a cutscene. They must cross the same landscape while unable to use the swift movement that has felt familiar since the beginning. The city has not grown larger, but her destination has become much farther away.

Enemies still surround her. Even opponents that a healthy 2B could fight or avoid can now cut off her route. A single skillful counterattack cannot cure the infection. Defeating an enemy leaves the disorder inside her intact, and briefly escaping the road does not halt its progression. Combat outside and collapse inside consume her remaining time from different directions.

While she moves, 9S tries to find her from the place where he landed. He has lost the Bunker and been separated from his companion, but if she is alive, he still has the goal of joining her again. Switching between their playable viewpoints does not give them access to all of one another’s information. He does not yet know how close 2B’s body is to its limit, or what request she will make of someone else.

3. The Wanted A2 Cuts Down the Enemies in Her Way

Near the commercial facility, 2B is threatened by YoRHa units again. Barely able to support herself, she no longer has the strength to fight everyone surrounding her. A2 appears and defeats the attackers. The deserter who killed the machine baby in the forest’s throne room and fought the two soldiers now acts to prevent 2B’s immediate destruction.

The player briefly controls A2 to deal with these enemies. Her movement contrasts with 2B’s restrictions under the infection. Even among combat units from the same lineage, there is a difference between a body that can currently move and one that cannot. After A2 eliminates the enemies, the two androids gain a short moment to face one another directly. But stopping the attack from outside has not removed the virus within 2B.

A2 sees that it is already too late. 2B knows she can no longer continue her mission and wait for her companion as before. The person who has helped her is neither the command center YoRHa told her to trust and return to nor the Bunker that stored her data. It is a wanted deserter who left that organization and has lived alone. The labels of enemy and ally that the war assigned them cannot fully explain this brief rescue.

4. The Memories in the Sword, and the Name 9S

2B leaves her memories in her sword and hands it to A2. She is not choosing to let everything become a forgotten past when her body stops. Unable to continue fully alive herself, she tries to entrust what she valued, and what she needs done next, to someone else. In the absence of regular backups to the Bunker, the sword becomes a means of carrying those memories onward into another body.

Her request concerns 9S. She entrusts his future to A2. A trust now emerges that cannot be explained solely by their earlier relationship in the forest, when they were opponents ordered to eliminate one another. It is not the result of having time for a long conversation that resolves their entire past and reconciles them. It arises from the urgent fact that the person in front of her can accept her wishes and act on them next.

What A2 receives is more than a powerful weapon. Within it are the people 2B spent her life with, the person she cared about, and what she can no longer do herself. A2’s later attempts to save 9S connect to this moment. Receiving the memories does not, however, mean that 2B completely possesses and controls A2’s body. What to do with those memories remains part of the living A2’s own actions.

2B conveys her wish to be ended before she loses control of her body. A2 accepts that request. Raising the sword and piercing 2B is the result of the infection and the final request that immediately precede it. From the outside, the scene looks like one android from the same army killing another. But who asked for what on the way to that moment changes the meaning of the act.

5. The Single Final Image Seen from Across the Bridge

9S runs toward 2B’s location. The player controls him again and heads for the place whose crisis they already know. Having just controlled 2B, the player knows how badly her body was failing and has seen her conversation with A2. 9S has not lived through all those moments alongside her. A large gap in information opens between the person watching the screen and the character arriving at the scene.

What he sees is the moment A2’s sword pierces 2B. Without hearing why his companion reached that condition or what she entrusted to A2, he sees her die at the hands of a familiar wanted deserter. He already has the image of A2 killing the infant king in the forest. Nothing in the scene he witnesses explains this death as mercy or the fulfillment of a request.

For 9S, A2 becomes the person who killed 2B. That judgment immediately connects with his refusal to lose someone so close to him. The knowledge that 2B left her memories with another being and asked that being to protect him has not reached him. In the same moment, A2 receives a request she must uphold, while 9S receives a killing he feels compelled to avenge.

Seeing 9S arrive in the distance, 2B leaves him with Nines, the nickname he had always asked her to use. The companion who kept trying to control her emotions accepts that name at the end, but 9S has not also heard the requests and choices that came before it. The bond she held onto while suppressing her emotions does not disappear even as her body stops. Yet what A2 receives of its meaning differs from what 9S understands. The man who ran to return to her could not receive that truth along with the sight of her death. This misalignment drives the battles to come.

6. The Rising Tower Severs the Path

Furious, 9S tries to charge at A2. But the two do not immediately fight to a final conclusion there. The ground shakes, enormous white structures rise, and their surroundings collapse. The emergence of the city’s new Tower overlaps with their personal catastrophe.

As the footing gives way, 9S falls below. He is separated from A2 without being able to undo the death he has just witnessed or finish asking why she did it. There is no homecoming in which he approaches 2B’s body, confirms her condition, and leaves together with her. What remains is the image of the piercing sword and his anger. During his fall, he receives no information that could change his judgment.

A2 does not die in this collapse and disappear from the story. She survives with 2B’s sword and memories and goes on to follow her own path. 9S will also awaken later with his Pod’s help. The two now move beyond the positions of supporting character and companion beside the same protagonist and become two viewpoints driven by different reasons. One carries a request; the other carries revenge.

7. The Next Story Left by a Body That Cannot Return

2B’s death is not immediately reversed under the same conditions as the black-box explosion in the first factory or 9S’s survival at ending A. The Bunker is destroyed, and her current body is infected. Leaving memories in her sword and Pod does not mean she can immediately walk out in a new body and settle the misunderstanding between the two survivors. A gap remains between the possibility of preserving memories and living and acting as that person in the present.

Within that gap, 9S loses the center of his world. Even after learning that humanity was gone, he descended to Earth to help 2B. A future without her is not yet a choice he can accept. He will build his remaining purpose around the killing he saw. Machines, the Tower, and A2 become the targets of that purpose.

A2 receives a burden pointing in the opposite direction. Having spent so long killing machines to avenge lost comrades, she has been asked to protect someone else’s future. Following that request will demand more complicated actions than simply eliminating every enemy in front of her. Her coming encounter with Pascal tests whether the woman who killed the infant king in the forest without hesitation can move toward caring for someone.

Sources and Scope of Verification

This account follows the game’s sequence of 2B’s infection and journey to the commercial facility, her transfer of the sword and memories to A2, what 9S witnesses, and the Tower’s emergence. It does not present A2’s action as an unambiguously malicious surprise murder, or claim that 9S already knows the conversation he never heard. It does not state that both subsequent protagonists die at this point. This is an AI-assisted editorial account, without reproduction of the original dialogue, lyrics, or novel text.
