The Flooded City’s Giant and 9S’s Disappearance After the Battle

Spoiler notice: this chapter covers the missile supply support mission, the battle with the enormous sea machine Grün, and 9S’s disappearance and the search for him. It connects the fighting seen by 2B in Route A with the actions played as 9S in Route B as different perspectives on the same event.

1. The Request Waiting After the Castle

After leaving the forest castle, 2B and 9S ask Pascal about A2. He has information about a dangerous android who has attacked machines, but what he knows cannot reveal her entire past. The two move on before reaching a conclusion about the word betrayal. The Resistance has a supply mission needing support, and war does not wait for answers to an individual’s questions.

Anemone’s assignment is to assist missile resupply in the Flooded City. Taking the sewer passage from the route exposed by the earlier ground collapse brings them to the coast, where submerged buildings come into view. The level where roads once ran is no longer the same as the places they can stand now. The remaining upper portions of a city designed for humans have become pathways for androids, while an aircraft carrier handling supplies waits at sea. The two must stop enemies attacking that ship.

They are not initially ordered to defeat a gigantic naval weapon by themselves. The mission begins as support: protecting supplies and stopping approaching enemies. After dealing with opponents on the ground and in the air, they board Flight Units and the battle’s scope expands. Other YoRHa combatants also take part. The situation here is not made up solely of 2B’s and 9S’s two bodies.

The machines they must stop keep coming toward the supply vessel. The pair use their units’ weapons to engage enemies in the air. Their earlier experience of defeating giant weapons and taking flight over the City Ruins carries forward, but this time there is an open sea and a moving object they must support upon it. This battle cannot be solved simply by dropping onto a building’s roof to hide for a moment.

2. What Rose Above the Water Was a Head

Grün emerges from the sea, changing the mission’s scale. Even the first visible portion dwarfs the machines they have been fighting. An enormous mouth attacks the aircraft carrier and the ship is destroyed. The supply target they were supposed to protect collapses before them. A battle to clear enemies so supplies could pass safely becomes a struggle to find a way to stop the giant already present.

The two attack its immense body, but pouring on firepower is not enough. Grün has powerful defenses and electromagnetic attack capabilities. Android bodies and the Flight Units they ride are not unaffected by such attacks. Even while firing from a distance, the whole force can lose its ability to operate if the enemy unleashes its battlefield-shaking power.

2B and 9S destroy the enemy’s small spherical turrets and target its electromagnetic defenses within. What first looked like continuous fire at one giant target becomes a sequence of stages that dismantle individual devices. Small flying machines also attack around it. The danger of approaching the huge opponent continues alongside the burden of keeping track of the smaller enemies nearby.

3. A Cannon Aimed Inside and the Electromagnetic Shock

9S reasons that even if the outer defenses are strong, an opening for attack may exist inside the mouth. They switch to using a cannon on the coast. Rather than continuing to hammer the outside armor from the air, they must fire into the enemy when it opens its mouth. The battle at sea becomes connected to using a weapon left onshore.

Their roles complement each other here as well. While 2B takes the shore cannon, waits for the mouth to open, and fires, 9S assists its operation through hacking. They land three hits inside the mouth, but the fighting does not end. Route B revisits the same event from 9S’s perspective, having the player carry out that support directly. Actions that passed as help at 2B’s side become specific work for him to solve when the viewpoint changes.

Then the giant raises itself, revealing that the mass first seen above the water was not the entire body, but its head. As the body below rises from the sea too, the soldiers become smaller still by comparison. Expectations based merely on the thought that Grün has little health left no longer provide a reliable sense of the end. The two return to their Flight Units and fight the giant’s devices and airborne enemies again. The successful shore bombardment ended only one stage.

Grün threatens the force with a powerful electromagnetic attack. 9S deploys a barrier to protect 2B, but the pair are driven back and cannot readily continue fighting as they were. Finding an effective method does not guarantee that they will remain able to use it from the same position. Plans built by moving between coast and sky are shaken again by the enemy’s next action.

At this point, Pascal and the machines following him come to help. Pascal helps the two soldiers get out of danger. A relationship that involved exchanging filters and oil in the village becomes an act of saving one another’s bodies. The giant threatening the androids is a machine, and so are those helping them escape its threat. The distinction they need to survive now is more specific than a single label of enemy.

4. The Weapon 9S Seeks While 2B Holds On

Even after Pascal’s help lets them move again, Grün remains. 9S separates from 2B to prepare another means of bringing it down. 2B must deal with the enemy immediately before her and buy time. The companion who had been firing beside her leaves his position not because he has abandoned the fight, but to prepare a different kind of strike.

2B and Pascal fight through the giant’s attacks. They must keep dealing with Grün’s weapons and defenses while also stopping smaller machines. If those left behind fall before 9S’s plan succeeds, the person that plan was meant to save will be gone too. Actions taking place in different positions share responsibility for the same conditions of survival.

What 9S finds is a missile. The supplies they originally had to protect now connect directly to a way of finishing the giant. He approaches and hacks the equipment to launch and guide the missile, then personally leads it into the enemy’s mouth. This is not support consisting only of sending a launch command from a safe distance. Route B does not leave the process as a result 2B hears about from afar; it shows the actions 9S performs while taking the risk himself.

As the missile enters Grün’s mouth and explodes, the battle heads toward its conclusion. Striking inside proves effective where attacks had failed to penetrate the strong outer defenses. But 9S is not an operator merely pressing a button at a desk in the safety of the Bunker. His body, handling the missile close to the target, is also within reach of the blast. The flames of victory become, at the same time, the shock that separates the companions.

5. The Person Missing When She Wakes

After the battle, 2B regains consciousness on the coast. Around her are traces left by the giant’s fighting, and the immense wreckage of the fallen Grün remains at sea. But the 9S who fought beside her is absent. Reporting that a battle is over and confirming that a companion has returned alive are different things. At the coastal factory they detonated their black boxes together. This time, after only 2B returns in her own body, she does not know where the other has gone.

2B tries to find 9S. The Pod explains that a dynamic scanner is needed to locate weak signals that ordinary detection has difficulty picking up. She does not yet know why he fails to answer, how far he was thrown, or how badly his body is damaged. Silence when called does not immediately establish death, but a vague hope that he is alive cannot supply a location either.

She returns to the Resistance Camp and asks Anemone for help. Anemone connects her with twins who have the necessary equipment: Devola and Popola. Two androids with the same names and appearance as the observers of the Replicant era now appear as helpers providing equipment to find a missing companion. This is not a scene in which those two earlier observers have simply survived unchanged and returned here. It is a meeting with two different individuals of the same models.

The twins provide Pod Program A170: Scanner. 2B equips it and returns to the Flooded City. After the battle, some access points and communications no longer function properly, making it necessary to cross the required routes herself again. This round trip differs from winning and advancing into a new region. She goes back to read traces of a companion lost in a place from which she has just emerged alive. Not every other soldier returned safely either, and she encounters their injuries and traces during the search.

6. The Depths Indicated by the Remaining Signal

Using the scanner toward the bus on the coast leads her to a damaged YoRHa soldier. From that soldier’s words, she gains a clue about where 9S went. This is not a search in which 2B walks the battlefield, picks up one of her companion’s belongings, and returns. Another survivor’s testimony and the equipment’s detection must connect before she can find the next path.

The trail leads into the city’s depths. A route connected to the underground area where they investigated the alien ships becomes her destination again. Then, the two descended side by side to find those who began the war. Now one must descend to find the other. The first investigation was about obtaining new information demanded by Command; for 2B now, urgently bringing back the companion who may be underground is what matters.

9S’s presence emerges differently during this search. When they were together, he asked questions, analyzed equipment, and spoke to those they met along the way. Once that voice disappears, she spends time moving alone, following the Pod’s guidance and a faint signal. Rather than simply explaining his role from memory, 2B physically walks the road without him as she searches.

What waits underground is another space Adam has made to understand humans. The white copied city contains forms resembling human life alongside an absence that fails to fill them. The living companion 2B seeks is entangled with the interests of the being who created that space. Their separation in the Flooded City now leads beyond a simple combat accident to an encounter that uses one person to draw out another’s emotions.

Sources and Scope of Verification

This commentary covers the game’s missile resupply mission and Grün battle, followed by obtaining the scanner and searching afterward. The specific support in which 9S handles the missile has been supplemented from Route B’s viewpoint. A separate scene explaining Grün’s past is addressed in a later Route B chapter. Different anime developments and stage-production epilogues have not been added as scenes of this event.
