A Crucible of Mud and Blood

In the ash-choked swamps of Zerus, a spiked primal creature lay hidden in the mud, holding its breath. Though the heat of boiling lava made the air shimmer, the beast's yellow eyes remained relentlessly locked onto its prey.
Another predator with massive jaws approached the edge of the swamp to drink the stagnant, turbid water. Tensing its muscles, the hidden beast calculated the exact moment to spring. On Zerus, survival was nothing more than a continuous struggle to seize the essence of other living things.
In a split second, the beast lunged from the mud, piercing the neck of the jawed predator with its razor-sharp claws. The prey collapsed without even a shriek, and the beast mounted its fallen quarry. Hot blood spilled into the swamp, blending with the acrid stench of sulfur.
The beast tore into the flesh of its prey, greedily drinking in the essence of life contained within. A strange energy coursed through its veins, surging wildly inside its body. An immediate, painful transformation took place as its bones thickened and its hide hardened.
The thick carapace—the most formidable trait of the creature that had been prey just moments ago—now erupted along the back of the victorious beast. Empowered by this new strength, the beast unleashed a long, piercing roar toward the sky. This was the sole law of Zerus, the only way its creatures knew how to live.
From the surrounding brush came the rustling of smaller creatures fleeing at the sound of the roar. Unstoppable, the beast ventured deeper into the swamp in search of new prey. Its hunger was never sated, and its craving for evolution was endless.
The sky of Zerus was shrouded in thick clouds of volcanic ash, blocking out even the starlight. On this barren world, the creatures known as the Primal Zerg knew no purpose other than to forge themselves into stronger beings. To them, essence was the only currency of survival.
On this hellish planet, where the eruptions of lava and the death throes of beasts echoed in turn, the Primal Zerg pressed blindly toward perfection. They remained entirely unaware that a massive, dark gaze was watching them, drawing closer from beyond the stars.
Proof of Purity

From atop a cliff, the beast looked down at a swarm of massive, insectoid Primal Zerg moving in unison. When the weakest member of the pack fell behind, its kin turned back without hesitation and tore it to shreds. Those who devoured their kin's flesh immediately grew longer legs and sharper jaws.
On Zerus, purity did not mean a fixed, unchanging form. Rather, it was the infinite potential to adapt to any shape—the ability to constantly reconstruct oneself by absorbing essence. This was the 'purity of essence' possessed by the Primal Zerg.
The beast on the cliff flexed, perfectly assimilating the thick carapace it had just absorbed into its own body. No rigid skeletons or genetic limitations existed for these creatures. There was only the intuitive law of evolution: take the essence of the strong, and their power becomes entirely your own.
The beast threw itself off the cliff, hurtling toward the pack's leader. With a massive crash, the two creatures collided, kicking up a cloud of dust. The leader's sharp tail stabbed into the beast's flank, but the newly acquired carapace deflected the fatal blow, throwing off sparks.
Though feeling the pain, the beast used it as fuel to sink its teeth into the leader's throat. Dark green fluid sprayed out as the leader's massive frame slowly collapsed. The other members of the pack did not intervene, watching with bated breath only for the moment a victor was decided.
As it inhaled the purest essence surging from the fallen leader's heart, the beast's vision expanded exponentially and its senses sharpened. The rearrangement of muscle fibers and the expansion of its neural network brought excruciating pain, but also an overwhelming rush of pleasure.
The members of the pack bowed their heads in submission to the beast, their new leader. They instinctively yielded to the victor's mighty essence. In this way, the Primal Zerg maintained a brutal ecosystem of survival of the fittest, where individual strength dictated the order of the pack.
Through essence, the creatures of Zerus shed their past selves and were constantly reborn as new entities. To them, death was merely nourishment for the stronger, and the survivors silently walked the endless cycle of struggle, carrying the potential of the fallen on their shoulders.
The Descent of Darkness and Corruption

One day, massive shadows cut across the red skies of Zerus. Descending through the volcanic ash clouds were colossal vessels that blotted out the starlight. The fallen Xel'Naga, Amon, had descended upon Zerus to find the 'purity of essence'—the other key to combining with the Protoss's purity of form to achieve his twisted designs.
As Amon's crimson gaze swept across the planet, the ground of Zerus trembled with an ominous vibration. He was fascinated by the infinite evolutionary potential of the Primal Zerg, but he deemed their uncontrollable savagery and scattered wills unfit for his army.
A massive, unseen psionic energy swept through the swamps and jungles, forcibly lifting countless Primal Zerg into the air. Suspended in the sky, the beasts thrashed in confusion, but their bodies froze helplessly before the overwhelming power. Amon's will crushed their minds.
Amon began to forcibly manipulate and twist the genes of the captured Zerg. The cycle of autonomous evolution, which had existed for individual survival, was severed, replaced by forced, uniform mutations designed solely for destruction and obedience. The primal spark vanished from the beasts' eyes, replaced by a crimson glow.
With bones protruding and flesh swelling, the Zerg—now weaponized according to Amon's design—poured back down onto the earth. They were no longer independent hunters seeking their own essence. They had been reduced to horrific bio-weapons, absolutely subservient to the commands of the fallen Xel'Naga.
Amon injected his dark essence into the Zerg genome, binding them with deep shackles so they could never defy him. Individual identity was thoroughly eradicated, and their very brain structures were completely redesigned to function solely as cogs in the massive collective known as the Swarm.
The mutated Zerg moved in perfect unison, beginning to hunt down the remaining Primal Zerg who had not yet been touched by Amon. This was not a struggle for survival, but a slaughter carried out solely to execute their master's commands. The land of Zerus echoed with the horrific screams of kin tearing kin apart.
Amon smiled with satisfaction as he watched this ruthless massacre. Learning from the failures of the Protoss, he sought to create a perfect weapon that would never fracture, moving toward a single purpose. Thus, the hungry beasts of Zerus were transformed into the Swarm that would devour the universe.
The Birth of the Overmind

Amon needed a massive focal point to unite and control the countless Zerg organisms. In the center of a boiling lava lake on Zerus, he coalesced the largest and most powerful psionic energy. Flesh and neural pathways intertwined grotesquely, and an entity resembling a colossal brain rose from the depths.
It was the absolute ruler of the Swarm, a single consciousness: the Overmind. When the Overmind opened its massive crimson eye for the first time, the minds of the mutated Zerg scattered across Zerus were bound into a single, vast network. Billions of sensory inputs poured into the Overmind's consciousness like a waterfall.
Upon its birth, the Overmind clearly understood its purpose. It was to act as the agent of Amon's will, leading the Swarm to cleanse the universe. The fear, hunger, and pain of individual Zerg dissolved into meaningless white noise within the Overmind's vast intellect.
The Zerg packs roaming the swamps stopped in unison and bowed their heads toward the Overmind. They no longer fought over prey. Once the Overmind's command was issued, they began to move in perfect formation, like a single, massive organism.
The Overmind perceived and controlled every event occurring across the planet simultaneously. If the vanguard of a pack fell into an enemy trap, the rear units immediately changed direction to launch a flanking attack. There was no delay between thought and action; only perfect efficiency ruled the Swarm.
Within the hive mind, the death of an individual caused no grief or disturbance. Even if thousands of Zerg burned to death in lava, the Overmind merely calculated the loss of forces with cold detachment. To the Swarm, individuals were nothing more than expendable, easily replaceable parts.
Absorbing the knowledge of the Xel'Naga, the Overmind refined the Swarm to be even more lethal. Through genetic manipulation, it constantly created new strains specialized for specific purposes. Creatures with maximized defenses and others spitting explosive acid covered the lands of Zerus according to the Overmind's design.
Crushed under the weight of the massive hive mind, the Zerg did not even realize what they had lost. They simply charged blindly, driven by the overwhelming voice of the Overmind echoing in their heads. The wild savagery of Zerus was replaced by orderly violence, and thus, the Swarm was complete.
Two Divergent Paths

Some Primal Zerg who refused to submit to Amon's control hid in the deep jungles and underground caverns of Zerus to avoid being swept away by the tide of the Swarm. Despising the uniform psionic wavelengths emitted by their corrupted kin, they huddled away to preserve their own pure essence.
A massive beast, one of the ancient and powerful Primal Zerg, peered through a crevice at the Swarm crawling over the sticky creep underground. In their eyes, there was no drive for survival, only hollow obedience. Snorting in disgust, the beast retreated deeper into the darkness.
The Swarm scoured the surface of Zerus, hunting down the hidden Primal Zerg. The Overmind could not tolerate these independent entities that threatened the unity of the Swarm. As the Swarm broke through the cavern entrances and poured inside, the Primal Zerg launched a desperate counterattack for survival.
The Primal Zerg unleashed erratic, savage attacks against the Swarm's uniform tactics. The beast tore through the Swarm's ranks with its massive claws, attempting to absorb their essence, but the flesh of the Swarm tasted bitter and tainted. Amon's influence had corrupted their essence.
Despite being outnumbered, the Primal Zerg never surrendered. To them, losing their identity and becoming slaves was a disgrace far worse than death. The beast collapsed the cavern ceiling to block the Swarm's advance, then led the few surviving members of its pack deeper into the subterranean depths.
Rather than digging through the collapsed cavern, the Overmind redirected the Swarm to find other prey. The Primal Zerg had barely escaped with their lives, but dominion over Zerus had already completely shifted to the Swarm. They were now fugitives, forced to live in hiding on their own home planet.
Thus, the Zerg of Zerus split into two entirely different paths. One was the massive Swarm united under Amon's will to devour the cosmos, and the other was the ancient Primal Zerg, hiding underground, blindly pursuing individual strength and purity of essence while biding their time.
Licking its wounds in the dark, the beast burned with hatred for the Swarm. They would gather essence, over and over, waiting for the day they could tear those corrupted hordes apart. In the heart of Zerus, the split history of the Zerg simmered in its own distinct ways.
The Expanding Structure of the Swarm

As the scale of the Swarm grew massive enough to blanket Zerus, the Overmind began to reach the limits of controlling such vast hordes alone. Splitting its own psionic energy, the Overmind created subordinate commanders to efficiently direct the Swarm: the Cerebrates.
Taking the form of giant larvae, the Cerebrates received the Overmind's will directly to command their respective broods. While absolutely obedient to the Overmind, they were granted a limited sense of self and the intelligence necessary to wage war. With the birth of the Cerebrates, the Swarm's chain of command became flawless.
The Cerebrates relayed their commands to the lowest organisms through massive, floating creatures called Overlords. As the Overlords filled the skies, emitting bizarre cries, the Zerg broods on the ground moved in perfect unison, executing orders like the gears of a precision machine.
The Overmind determined that relying solely on the creatures of Zerus would limit the Swarm's evolution. It turned the Swarm's gaze to the cosmos, ordering them to hunt the massive space-faring behemoths passing near Zerus. Breaking through the atmosphere, the Swarm ruthlessly descended upon these colossal beasts.
Following a horrific slaughter in the vacuum of space, the Swarm succeeded in absorbing the essence of these space-faring creatures. Their genes were integrated into the Zerg biological structure, giving rise to new strains capable of surviving and flying in a vacuum. The Swarm now possessed the power to escape planetary gravity.
Furthermore, the Overmind selected and assimilated superior genes from various alien species into the Swarm. Species with heavy armor were used to bolster the Swarm's defenses, while those carrying deadly toxins were engineered into lethal biochemical weapons. The Swarm had become a monster that absorbed every predator in the cosmos.
The Cerebrates strategically deployed the newly absorbed strains within their broods to maximize their combat power. Behemoths, transformed into colossal bioships, gathered in orbit, carrying hundreds of millions of Zerg warriors waiting in hibernation. The Swarm was now ready to leave Zerus and march into the cosmos.
The Overmind felt satisfaction as it gazed upon the horrific evolution achieved by its creations. The screams and despair of countless species had become the flesh and bone of the Swarm, making them more perfect. It was certain that the universe would soon kneel before this merciless hunger.
The Invisible Shackles

Yet, as the Swarm grew stronger, an inexplicable oppression and pain swirled deep within the Overmind. Though it possessed an intellect vast enough to span the cosmos, the Overmind had to face the horrific truth that it could choose nothing of its own free will.
The absolute directive Amon had implanted in the deepest recesses of the Overmind's neural network—to destroy the Protoss and cleanse the universe—constantly crushed its sense of self. It was an inescapable shackle, and the Overmind was merely a colossal puppet existing solely to carry out that command.
Despite its intellect growing to rival that of the Xel'Naga, the Overmind felt a profound despair at its plight, forced to serve its creator's dark purpose. The Swarm was a collective of slaves stripped of freedom, and the Overmind, standing at its apex, was merely the grandest slave of all.
At one point, Amon's crimson will struck the Overmind's consciousness, injecting a new vision. It was a fragment of a future where all life in the universe was extinguished, and even the Zerg Swarm was absorbed and utterly destroyed by horrific monsters known as Hybrids. In that vision, the Overmind saw the absolute end of the Swarm.
To Amon, the Zerg were merely a disposable tool to destroy the Protoss and fashion his own physical host. Realizing that the creator's true purpose was not the prosperity of the Swarm but its complete annihilation, the Overmind was seized by immense rage and terror. Yet, the harder it struggled, the tighter the shackles bound it.
Evading Amon's surveillance, the Overmind began to seek a possibility of resistance through the narrowest cracks in its consciousness. While defying its creator directly was impossible, it had to find even the smallest seed of hope for the Swarm's survival. This was the single, secret craving granted to the Overmind.
Within the Swarm's hive mind, the Overmind's suppressed agony echoed in silence. Unaware of their master's deep despair, the Cerebrates waited only for commands of destruction. Hanging its massive tentacles, the Overmind yearned for a way to break the horrific chains of fate binding both itself and the Swarm.
When Amon's forced will dominated the Overmind's mind once more, it ceased its resistance and assumed a posture of false obedience, pretending to submit. Outwardly, it prepared to destroy the universe as the creator's faithful servant, but inwardly, it was preparing a desperate gamble for the survival of the Swarm.
Hunger for the Stars

Following Amon's command, the Overmind scattered countless scouts into the cosmos to locate the unknown species known as the Protoss. Traversing the sea of stars, these scouts scoured the abyss of space to detect even the faintest psionic wavelength. The Swarm's hunger now reached beyond Zerus, aiming for the entire universe.
During its search, the Overmind faintly detected the wavelength of a strange species existing somewhere in the universe—unrefined, yet possessing immense psionic potential. It was the essence of a race called humanity, rough and unstable unlike the Protoss, but harboring infinite possibilities.
The Overmind's massive intellect surged as it analyzed the faint wavelength. It calculated that if it could assimilate this strange race's powerful psionic potential into the Swarm, it might break the genetic shackles imposed by Amon and save the Swarm from its doomed fate.
However, the Swarm's immediate destination was the Protoss territory designated by Amon. Hiding its secret plan for the strange race in the deepest recesses of its consciousness, the Overmind issued the order to advance to the Overlords and Behemoths. The massive organic fleet blanketing Zerus's orbit began to move in unison.
The Behemoths, carrying hundreds of millions of Zerg organisms in hibernation, warped space to make the warp jump. The land of Zerus, covered in red volcanic ash, slowly receded, and endless darkness and starlight filled the Swarm's vision. It was the moment the Zerg officially revealed their horrific presence to cosmic history.
At the vanguard of the Swarm, the Overmind extended its massive tentacles of consciousness to track the Protoss signature. The inevitable, colossal clash between the Zerg—creations of the fallen Xel'Naga—and the Protoss, who inherited the purity of form, was drawing closer by the second. The Overmind sensed that this war would decide the fate of the universe.
Receiving the Overmind's commands, the Cerebrates deployed their respective broods into battle formations, preparing for the coming slaughter. Even in the vacuum of space, the sound of the Zerg's hungry jaws snapping seemed to echo like an auditory hallucination. The Swarm tore fiercely through the cosmos, driven solely to devour the enemy before them and evolve.
While Amon's oppressive gaze watched them from beyond the stars, the Overmind waited in silence for its secret savior. Even as it plunged into the massive storm of war with the Protoss, the Overmind's crimson eye remained fixed on that strange psionic potential it would one day encounter.
