Key information
Developer The Coalition recently confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day experienced a distributed denial-of-service attack over the weekend. This malicious activity caused intermittent login issues and disconnects for users attempting to play the title on PC and Xbox Series X and S consoles.
The studio stated that its teams are actively monitoring and mitigating the situation to maintain service stability. While online speculation has attempted to link the attack to various motivations, including claims regarding the game's content, the developer has not identified a specific cause. The game is currently reported as up and running.
The attack follows a period of internal uncertainty at The Coalition. Reports from Eurogamer highlighted staff concerns regarding potential layoffs following the game's launch, reflecting broader anxiety within Microsoft's gaming division. CEO Asha Sharma has overseen significant organizational restructuring and staff reductions totaling nearly 2,000 positions this financial year.
Despite unofficial estimates suggesting a soft start with 230,000 copies sold, studio head Mike Crump emphasized that the game's success is measured by its ability to showcase Xbox hardware capabilities. The title remains exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem, intentionally bypassing a PlayStation 5 release to focus on demonstrating the performance limits of Microsoft's platform.
