Key information
Owlcat's upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy features intricate detective systems where players act as inquisitorial acolytes solving cases rather than completing standard quests, according to senior narrative designer Veronika Larionova in an interview with PC Gamer.
The game incorporates classic detective elements like clue cards, a detective board, and a detective journal, alongside unique tools such as the Servo-Ossuarium, which is a device featuring servo-skull assistants used for tracking trails, intercepting signals, and running data analysis.
Larionova noted that players can conclude investigations whenever they want and accuse suspects based on thin evidence because their word is treated as undeniable truth, though digging deeper can reveal new details or clear a suspect entirely.
While the tabletop RPG rulebooks inspired the project, fans can also roleplay with heavy burdens of responsibility similar to Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn, facing consequences that affect story branches, rewards, and character endings in the Scintilla system.
