Facepunch Studios intends to transition its s&box platform to a free-to-play model by the end of the year. Founder Garry Newman stated that the current entrance fee acts as a deterrent, noting that the platform requires a larger player base rather than upfront payments.

The platform is shifting its strategy to prioritize human curation over quantity. Newman argued that a "Netflix for games" approach is ineffective, as players prefer discovery through influencers and community recommendations. Consequently, the studio is moving away from an open enrollment system for the Play Fund, replacing it with an approval process to filter out low-quality content like clickers and idlers.

Technical changes include migrating map hosting to the Steam Workshop, which Newman described as a more efficient use of resources than the previous proprietary backend. Additionally, the studio is working to surpass Garry's Mod by expanding multiplayer features, NPCs, and vehicle support, while also reducing download sizes for top games by 22%.

Existing users who previously purchased access will be compensated with exclusive Steam inventory items. Those who paid $20 will receive additional rewards compared to those who paid $10, as the studio seeks to maintain goodwill during this transition.
