Rockstar Games has officially refuted claims suggesting that the development budget for GTA VI matches the $1.5 billion cost required to construct the Burj Khalifa. Jennifer Kolbe, the Head of Publishing at Rockstar Games, confirmed in an interview with Bloomberg that these specific financial rumors are inaccurate.
While the studio declined to disclose the exact financial figures, Kolbe acknowledged that GTA VI currently stands as the most expensive video game project in development. The speculation regarding a multi-billion dollar budget stems from the extensive eight-year development cycle undertaken by the team.
The prolonged production period was attributed to various internal challenges, including refining the project's initial vision, selecting the setting, and investing in proprietary engine technology. Developers also faced the complex task of balancing realistic gameplay elements with entertainment value throughout the lengthy process.
Observers and analysts previously estimated the massive costs by comparing the project's duration to the significant operational expenses of GTA Online, which reportedly requires approximately half a billion dollars annually. Despite these high-profile estimates, Rockstar maintains that the specific $1.5 billion figure is incorrect.
