Former Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan recently discussed the personal challenges of serving as the public face for the hero shooter. Despite his natural preference for privacy, Kaplan accepted the high-profile position to support his development team and the game's growth during his tenure at Blizzard Entertainment.

Kaplan described himself as an introvert who avoids social media, noting that his public presence was strictly a professional duty. He explained that stepping into the spotlight was a necessary sacrifice to help the game navigate various periods of development.

The director faced significant toxicity, including verbal abuse and threats from players during content droughts or controversial hero updates. While Blizzard found that releasing substantial new content helped improve player sentiment, the constant public scrutiny took a personal toll on Kaplan.

Since departing Blizzard in 2021, Kaplan has transitioned to his new studio, Kintsugiyama, where he is currently developing a project titled The Legend of California. He expressed relief at fading into the background, describing the withdrawal from his former public responsibilities as a positive personal change.
