PlayStation has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new tier of AI-driven upscaling performance developed through Project Amethyst, an AI graphics collaboration with AMD. Previously, computational demands made bringing features like the PS5 Pro's PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution to the base PS5 console impossible. However, through an optimized neural network architecture and an implementation tailored to maximize PS5 performance, QSSR now brings AI-guided upscaling benefits to standard PS5 hardware.
The first titles to feature the new QSSR library are Marvel: Lobezno and Ghost of Yōtei. Both games receive patches today, adding QSSR as an additional graphical option on the PS5. Mike Fitzgerald, technology director at Insomniac Games, noted that QSSR provides greater pixel-level clarity and stability across environments like Madripoor and Shinjuku in Marvel: Lobezno. Similarly, Jasmin Patry, lead rendering engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, stated that Ghost of Yōtei will utilize QSSR to resolve fine character and environment details with unprecedented temporal stability on the base console.
Looking forward, QSSR will be made available generally to all PlayStation developers, with the company anticipating more titles will apply these image quality improvements in the future.
