Epic Games is shifting its development strategy for an ambitious upcoming shooter game featuring Marvel and Star Wars characters. Following a 1.5 billion dollar investment from Disney in 2024, the company is now mandating an AI-first approach to accelerate production on the project, which has reportedly faced delays.

Internal directives indicate a move away from manual coding. Management has instructed developers to utilize generative AI tools, such as Anthropic's Claude, for both programming and graphic asset creation. Staff members are now tasked with supervising and refining the outputs generated by these automated systems.

This transition follows the March 24, 2026, announcement of over 1,000 layoffs, which CEO Tim Sweeney attributed to a decline in Fortnite engagement. While the company claims this strategy aims to empower teams to create more effectively, the shift has caused significant internal concern. Bloomberg reports that staff expressed skepticism during a meeting, questioning how the team will manage errors produced by AI.

The project, originally targeted for a March 2027 release, remains without a confirmed launch date. Epic Games continues to face pressure to address development delays while navigating the broader industry debate regarding the impact of generative AI on creative roles and overall product quality.
