Key information
Blizzard is developing World of Warcraft Forever to expand horizontally rather than pursuing traditional vertical progression like gear score or level cap increases. Executive Producer Holly Longdale and Associate Production Director Clay Stone recently shared at PAX Australia that the project aims to capture the core values of the original launch experience while introducing new content.
The team is utilizing a three-tiered approach for future content, categorizing ideas into expected wishlist items like Mount Hyjal, high-concept additions such as Zephras Isle, and seamless new regions like the Riverglades. These additions are designed to feel authentic to the original vanilla era while providing unexpected experiences for the player base.
Managing community feedback has become a significant challenge due to the massive scale of the beta, which Longdale describes as the largest in Blizzard's history. The developers have adopted a strategy of prioritizing data-driven research over the loudest voices on social media, acknowledging that they cannot satisfy every player and must instead focus on maintaining a cohesive game vision.
The shift toward experimental content was largely inspired by the 2023 launch of WoW Classic Hardcore. This success convinced the team that they could successfully build entirely new experiences, leading to the current development of zones like Riverglades, which players have already begun exploring in the beta ahead of the full release.
