Key information
Valve is allegedly developing an OLED iteration of its Steam Frame VR headset, identified by the codename "Plano" within the company's Linux kernel source code. This project appears to be a mid-generation refresh, with development activity documented between March and early October 2026.
Technical specifications found in the driver code suggest a native resolution of 3552x3840 per eye, significantly higher than the 2160x2160 LCDs in the existing model. To maintain performance, the device reportedly defaults to 1776x1920 per eye while utilizing the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. Experimental features include a 1.5x scaling mode at 2368x2560 and support for 90 Hz or 120 Hz refresh rates.
The hardware may incorporate foveated scaling, a technique allowing the display controller to increase pixel density based on the user's gaze. Given that the current Steam Frame launched with a $1,059 price tag due to rising component costs, an OLED variant would likely command a higher price point.
Valve has not officially confirmed the existence of this OLED model, and it remains uncertain if the project will reach commercial release. Industry speculation suggests that if the product does materialize, a launch before late 2027 is considered unlikely.
