Key information
Valve has officially ceased production of the Valve Index headset, according to a recent update on the Steam store. While the company is clearing out remaining inventory, it confirmed that existing owners will continue to receive support through Steam and SteamVR.
The US store listing reflects a 20% price reduction for the headset, which is now available for $399.20. Additionally, replacement parts such as the tether and left controller have also received 20% discounts as the company liquidates its remaining stock.
This transition follows the announcement of the Steam Frame, which opened for preorders on September 14. Unlike the Index, which launched in June 2019, the new device utilizes camera-based inside-out tracking. Consequently, the Steam Frame is incompatible with the Lighthouse base stations required by the Index.
Lawrence Yang confirmed the manufacturing halt in November 2025. Prospective buyers should note that the Steam Frame is currently restricted to a reservation lottery system, making the remaining Index units the final opportunity to purchase new Lighthouse-tracked hardware from Valve.
