Key information
According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, US video game console sales experienced their weakest August performance in 13 years. Total hardware volume dropped 15% year-over-year to 559,000 units, marking the lowest August figure since 2013.
Performance varied by manufacturer, with PlayStation unit sales declining 11%, Xbox falling 31%, and Nintendo dropping 15% compared to the previous year. Despite lower volume, average hardware prices rose from $476 to $541, as consumers paid more for fewer devices.
Market saturation and high entry barriers are cited as primary factors. Mid-gen upgrades, such as the $900 PS5 Pro, have driven prices to historical highs. Furthermore, price increases earlier in 2026 caused a frontloaded buying wave, effectively draining summer demand.
While unit volume decreased, Sony saw dollar sales grow 17% due to higher-tier models. Unlike the 2013 transition period, no successor consoles have been announced to drive future interest, leaving the current generation in a period of slowed hardware momentum.
