Mark Darrah, a veteran who departed BioWare in 2020, has attributed the failure of Dragon Age: The Veilguard to significant development hurdles. According to Darrah, the project suffered from a lack of senior leadership and inconsistent scheduling imposed by Electronic Arts.

Darrah claims the development process between 2017 and 2019 was plagued by inadequate planning. He notes that the release date was shifted repeatedly, forcing the team to constantly chase deadlines rather than maintaining a clear perspective on the project's direction.

The game, which launched two years ago, failed to meet Electronic Arts' expectations. The publisher had reportedly suggested the title should have functioned as a live-service game to achieve success. Following the release, BioWare underwent several layoffs.

While BioWare is currently working on Mass Effect 5, concerns regarding the studio's future have emerged. Electronic Arts had previously pushed for annual releases from the developer, a goal that remained unfulfilled.
