Key information
Canonical has officially launched Ubuntu 26.10, codenamed "Stonking Stingray." This release introduces GNOME 51, which aims to provide a more responsive desktop environment, alongside the Linux kernel 7.3.
A primary addition is Myna, an optional speech-to-text agent that operates locally using on-device LLMs. Jon Seager, VP of Ubuntu Engineering, describes this as a milestone for AI-assisted desktops, prioritizing accessibility for all users.
The update expands enterprise and security capabilities by migrating to Rust-based uutils coreutils and implementing post-quantum package signing. Additionally, Microsoft Entra ID integration now supports passwordless authentication and password-plus-MFA flows.
Hardware support is bolstered by Linux kernel 7.3, covering Intel Xe3P, AMD Zen 6, and NVIDIA 615.x drivers. Furthermore, ROCm has been upgraded to version 10.0, enhancing compatibility with AMD GPU architectures and frameworks like SGLang and vLLM.
