Key information
Digital Extremes has officially released The Icebind, a new six-player game mode for Warframe. Formerly known as Glacial Defiance, the mode was slightly delayed before its current launch. Community Director Megan Everett clarified that The Icebind is not a raid, nor is it a return to the game's legacy eight-player Trials, despite offering a similar sense of coordinated challenge.
The mode emphasizes team coordination and strategic squad composition. Players are restricted to unique Warframe selections, meaning a squad cannot contain duplicates of the same frame. This requirement encourages players to utilize specific roles, such as healers like Trinity, to overcome the mode's high difficulty level.
A significant limitation at launch is the absence of public matchmaking, requiring players to form their own six-person squads. While this presents a hurdle for solo-focused players, Digital Extremes intends to explore smaller squad sizes in the future based on community feedback. Additionally, loot rewards are performance-based, though all participants receive compensation for completing the mission regardless of whether they finish optional side objectives.
The decision to tie additional rewards to side objectives is intended to minimize potential griefing within the challenging environment. By incentivizing teamwork through these requirements, the developers aim to foster a cooperative atmosphere. The Icebind is available now, while players continue to await further information regarding the upcoming Tau update.
