Sony appears to be scaling back its extended reality initiatives, as the company has reportedly transferred a significant collection of intellectual property to Meta. This move involves the transfer of 43 United States patents between June and September of this year, focusing on virtual, augmented, and mixed reality technologies.

The scope of this transfer extends beyond the United States, encompassing a total of 419 global patents. While 180 of these are held in the U.S., the remaining 239 patents were filed across various international regions, including Japan, China, Korea, and Europe, where Sony previously maintained research and development operations.

These assets, developed by Sony between 2010 and 2022, cover various hardware components such as head-mounted displays and specialized glass types. The acquisition allows Meta to bolster its internal hardware development team by integrating proven gaming-focused technologies.

Industry reports suggest that this divestment makes the development of a successor to the PSVR 2 headset highly unlikely. Although the PSVR 2 launched in 2023 for the PlayStation 5 and later received a PC adapter, Sony's shift in patent ownership signals a potential departure from its previous VR hardware trajectory.
