Key information
Record of Lodoss War originated not from a novel, but from a 1986 tabletop role-playing campaign. Published in Comptiq magazine between 1986 and 1989, these sessions were transcribed as replays, a format where player decisions and dice rolls were edited into narratives. Mastered by Ryo Mizuno, the campaign featured players like Hiroshi Yamamoto, who controlled the iconic elf Deedlit.
The visual design of Deedlit, created by Yutaka Izubuchi, established the long-eared aesthetic now common in anime. While Izubuchi claims he simply drew the elf as he imagined her, this design became a lasting convention. The campaign itself utilized a classic party composition of a warrior, elf, dwarf, cleric, thief, and mage, mirroring the structure of Dungeons & Dragons.
Legal complications with TSR prevented the group from officially integrating Lodoss into Dungeons & Dragons. Consequently, Group SNE developed Sword World RPG, which utilized six-sided dice because polyhedral dice were scarce in 1989 Japan. Sword World eventually surpassed Dungeons & Dragons in popularity within Japan, surviving through multiple editions.
Mizuno adapted the campaign into novels starting in 1988, leading to successful manga and anime adaptations. The 13-episode OVA by Madhouse aired between 1990 and 1991. Hiroshi Yamamoto, a key player in the original sessions, passed away on March 29, 2024.
