Key information
Modder Sword has released PS5SX2, a new software tool for jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles that enables native PlayStation 2 gaming. This project adapts the popular PCSX2 emulator to run directly on the console's custom Zen 2 hardware, allowing users to play games without streaming from a host system.
The software utilizes a modified version of the ps5vk translation layer to interface with the console's hardware. It supports various disc image formats such as ISO, CHD, CSO, and ZSO, alongside physical PlayStation 2 game discs via internal or external USB optical drives, regardless of region.
PS5SX2 offers significant graphical enhancements, including 6X upscaling to reach 4K resolution and support for AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution. Users can also apply .pnach patch files to unlock widescreen or 60 FPS modes. However, the software cannot read PlayStation 2 games released on CDs due to the PlayStation 5 optical drive's hardware limitations.
Additional features include online play via emulated network adapters, support for keyboard and mouse, and virtual memory cards. Looking ahead, developer Sword has confirmed that PlayStation 3 disc support is currently in development for a future RPCS3 port on the platform.
