PlayStation announced a new AI upscaling technology named QSSR, or Quick Spectral Super Resolution, for the standard PS5 on October 2, 2026.

Developed as an evolution of the PSSR technology utilized in the PS5 Pro, QSSR aims to enhance visual detail and stability on the base console. It relies on an efficient neural network structure and an implementation optimized specifically for the PS5, overcoming previous processing limitations that kept PSSR off the standard hardware.

The initial games supporting QSSR will be "Marvel's Wolverine" and "Ghost of Yōtei," with plans to expand the lineup in the future. The PlayStation Blog has published comparison videos demonstrating QSSR enabled versus disabled across resolution, performance, and ray tracing modes.

Mike Fitzgerald, technical director at Insomniac Games, stated that QSSR allows "Marvel's Wolverine" to render scenery with greater pixel-level clarity and stability. Meanwhile, Jasmin Patry, lead rendering engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, praised QSSR for its ability to portray fine details in the characters and landscapes of "Ghost of Yōtei," noting that visual stability has reached a level previously unattainable on the PS5.

According to the PlayStation Blog, QSSR will subsequently be made widely available to developers working on PlayStation titles.
