Key information
Developer Sword has introduced physical disc compatibility to PS5SX2, a native port of the PCSX2 emulator designed for jailbroken PlayStation 5 systems. This functionality debuted in the version 2.01 beta released on October 10.
The emulator does not execute software directly from the media. Instead, the system copies the disc contents to internal storage upon the initial insertion, subsequently launching the game from that local file. Sword notes that this process has currently undergone testing on only a single original PS5 unit.
Hardware limitations prevent the console's internal drive from reading CDs, rendering CD-based PS2 titles incompatible. However, version 2.02 introduced an experimental feature allowing users to read discs via external USB DVD or Blu-ray drives, potentially assisting owners of the Digital Edition console.
While the software supports rendering at up to 6x the native resolution, the developer cautions that certain titles may exceed the performance capabilities of a standard PS5 at that setting. Furthermore, Sword intends to implement PS3 disc support through a future RPCS3 port.
