Key information
Nintendo has officially stated that it intends to maintain support for physical game releases on its upcoming Switch 2 console. Bill van Zyll, the company's Vice President and General Manager for Latin America, confirmed these plans during an interview at the Brasil Game Show 2026.
According to van Zyll, the decision to continue offering physical media is driven by consumer preference. He noted that the company recognizes the strong affinity fans have for physical formats, which remain particularly popular within Latin American markets such as Brazil.
This approach contrasts with Sony, which previously announced that disc production for new PlayStation titles will cease in January 2028. While Nintendo's own data indicates that digital sales accounted for 61.5% of software revenue between April and June, the company continues to support both distribution methods for its next hardware iteration.
Despite the current commitment to cartridges, Nintendo has been pricing digital Switch 2 exclusives lower than their physical counterparts since May. While the company maintains that there are no immediate plans to abandon physical media, the long-term strategy remains subject to potential future adjustments.
