Key information
Intel will remain involved in Elon Musk's Terafab project, according to Intel chief executive Lip-Bu Tan, who spoke on Wednesday. Concurrently, Elon Musk stated that Terafab remains committed to building and operating its own fab, though he proposed leasing a portion of it to TSMC.
In April, Intel and Terafab announced a partnership where the semiconductor production venture by SpaceX, Tesla, and xAI would utilize Intel's next-generation 14A fabrication process. Intel is expected to license its manufacturing technology to Terafab, though details of the collaboration remain unknown.
Elon Musk dismissed rumors that his companies would partner with TSMC to build and operate the fab. Musk wrote on X that Terafab will build and run the facility itself, while floating the possibility that TSMC could sublease part of the space.
The proposed sublease presents several logistical and operational challenges. Fabs equipped for Intel's 14A process would require vastly different equipment and configurations for TSMC nodes. Additionally, sharing a facility could create intellectual property protection issues involving Intel tech, complicate downtime liabilities, and raise questions about overbuilding capacity if excess space exists.
