Key information
An enthusiast known as TrashBench has challenged standard PC building conventions by experimenting with non-traditional GPU and component placement. By ignoring established norms for hardware positioning, the modder successfully demonstrated significant thermal improvements for both the graphics card and the processor.
The testing process involved a baseline configuration using an RTX 3080 and a 360mm AIO CPU cooler, with thermal loads generated by 3DMark Time Spy and 7-Zip benchmarks. The modder tested various unconventional layouts, including placing the GPU at the bottom of the case or vertically alongside side-mounted intake fans.
Initial experiments yielded a 19°C reduction in GPU hotspot temperatures, though this configuration negatively impacted CPU thermals. Through further iterative adjustments, the modder identified a balanced setup that achieved a 14°C drop in GPU hotspot temperatures alongside a 3.3°C reduction in CPU temperatures.
This optimized configuration featured the GPU mounted vertically against side intake fans, while the CPU AIO radiator remained in a traditional exhaust position. The modder noted that utilizing PCIe riser cables of various lengths was essential for facilitating these alternative hardware arrangements during the testing process.
