Key information

Sony makes a strong controller with the DualSense, but it lacks modern third-party features like TMR joysticks, rear paddle buttons, and onboard profiles unless you buy the $200 DualSense Edge. Several alternative controllers offer these modern conveniences and dedicated software for less cost.

The GameSir G7 Pro is a pro-style controller weighing 7.1 ounces. It includes remappable buttons, a charging dock, a 2.4GHz connection operating at a 1,000Hz polling rate, optical micro switches, and Hall Effect triggers with a hair trigger slider.

The 8BitDo Pro 2 costs $42 and is modeled after a Super Nintendo controller with dual Hall Effect sticks and two back paddles, while the newer Pro 3 adds TMR sticks and a charging dock for $60. Meanwhile, the GameSir Cyclone V2 offers TMR joysticks and a charging dock for about $50, though its dock can be difficult to use.

Finally, the Valve Steam Controller replicates Steam Deck functionality on any PC through Steam Input and dual touchpads, but it is currently sold out and requires joining a reservation queue.
