Key information

Gears of War: E-Day has received strong critical acclaim, yet early sales estimates suggest the title may struggle to convert this success into traditional retail purchases. According to Alinea Analytics, the game sold approximately 230,000 copies during its early-access period, with most users opting for Xbox Game Pass instead.

The game, which launched Oct. 6 on Xbox Series X and PC, saw 168,000 sales on Steam and 62,000 across Xbox platforms. Analyst Rhys Elliott reported that 1.7 million players accessed the game via Game Pass, including 722,000 who purchased a $30 Premium Edition upgrade for early access. Microsoft has not confirmed these figures.

Critics have largely praised the prequel, with Metacritic and OpenCritic scores of 88 and 87 respectively. Polygon lauded the combat and emotional narrative, though noted the campaign can drag. IGN and ScreenRant awarded 9/10 scores, while PC Gamer criticized repetitive encounters and an exhausting 20-plus-hour campaign. GameSpot noted a reluctance to evolve beyond series conventions.

These estimates raise concerns regarding whether Game Pass undermines full-price sales for flagship titles. Elliott suggested many players might have purchased the game at $70 without the subscription service. Furthermore, current reviews remain preliminary as they exclude multiplayer and Horde Siege modes, leaving the final reception of the complete package uncertain.
