Key information
Gears of War: E-Day is exceptionally demanding on PC and Xbox Series X. However, developer The Coalition implemented a clever performance solution for the Xbox Series S by utilizing its solid-state drive to boost performance.
Studio technical director Kate Raynor explained to Digital Foundry that the team tapped into the SSD when the Series S ran out of memory. Unlike the Series X equipped with sixteen gigabytes of RAM, the Series S features ten gigabytes.
To combat the speed limitations typically associated with offloading overflow data to slower storage, The Coalition strategically managed memory allocation. Digital Foundry noted that the studio prioritized keeping actively needed assets in faster system memory while shifting other data to the SSD.
Digital Foundry observed that frequent page file refreshes carry a performance cost and can degrade performance over time. Alongside this memory technique, The Coalition disabled Lumen reflections to ensure smooth execution on the hardware.
Released last week into early access, the title brings significant changes compared to previous entries in the franchise. Despite hardware constraints, The Coalition successfully established the project as a major exclusive for the platform.
