Key information
Microsoft's Gears of War: E-Day has launched, with Alinea Analytics providing initial commercial performance insights. Analyst Rhys Elliott reports that the title has sold approximately 230,000 copies, with 168,000 units attributed to Steam and 62,000 to Xbox platforms.
The availability of the game on Game Pass significantly impacts these figures. Data suggests that 1.7 million users accessed the title via subscription. However, 722,000 of those players purchased a $30 Premium upgrade for early access and additional content, which Elliott notes cannibalized standard sales.
Despite lower unit sales on Xbox, the platform generated roughly $26 million of the $37 million total revenue, compared to $11 million from Steam. Including those who purchased the upgrade, nearly 950,000 individuals contributed financially to the game.
Elliott characterizes these as soft numbers for Xbox, describing the $70 edition as functionally dead on the console. He argues that the current strategy charges the most valuable customers the least, suggesting that many players would have purchased the full game without the day-one Game Pass inclusion.
