Key information

Dungeons & Dragons is crossing over with World of Warcraft for its first Universes Beyond crossover. Principal game designer and project lead James Wyatt explained during a presentation attended by PC Gamer that the project focuses on paraphrasing the MMO for the tabletop framework rather than executing a direct 1:1 translation of mechanics.

The rulebook covers Azeroth and expansions up to Midnight, introducing reworked mechanics like Jaina Proudmoore freezing a player with an ice lance unless thawed, alongside gathering and crafting professions utilizing wisdom checks and tool proficiencies. The renown system mirrors faction reputation, granting rewards like elemental minion summons or Wish spells from dragon aspects.

Dungeons serve as toolboxes for DMs, letting groups sneak around or skip bosses with alternate routes, or perform tribute runs like in Dire Maul, without trial-and-error combat or loot disputes. PC Gamer noted that the team thoughtfully selected elements to pull from Blizzard's world rather than merely swapping names.

More details, including how classes map onto the tabletop format, will be revealed ahead of the November 12 release. Wyatt indicated a follow-up book could be possible depending on the reception of this initial volume.
