Key information
Invoke Studios is drawing from over 50 years of TTRPG history for Dungeons & Dragons: Warlock. While the developers acknowledged that Wizards of the Coast's tabletop game contains incredibly powerful spells that could pose design challenges, the team chose to use these potent abilities as a starting point. Dominic Guay, head of Invoke Studios, explained in an interview with Edge magazine that the team's philosophy was to first make abilities overpowered and fun before balancing them.
The combat system features the protagonist Kaatri, whose abilities were previously showcased during the Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live gameplay broadcast. Rather than selecting from a simple list of spells, players use different button combinations to chain melee attacks and spells together for real-time magic expression, allowing them to experiment and think on the fly.
Guay also noted that players will learn how to be a warlock alongside the protagonist, acquiring more spells fairly quickly while navigating an initial learning phase due to the distinct controller setup. Dungeons & Dragons: Warlock is slated for release in 2027, with players expected to receive more information over time regarding Kaatri's journey and the powers granted by Tasha, an iconic D&D witch.
