Key information
Goro Abe, the director of the WarioWare series and a developer who also worked on Wario Land 4, left Nintendo this year after a 25-year tenure. Following his departure from the company, Abe chose to step away from the commercial video game industry at 50 years old, feeling that development consumes too much time and that he would not be able to create many more titles in the future.
Instead, Abe took on a role as a video game design professor at the Osaka University of Electro-Communication, where he also researches new experiences in the Experimental Game Design Laboratory. He noted that he wanted to test himself with something new and teaching provided an interesting challenge that gave him fresh perspectives on how younger players interact with games.
Looking back on his career change, Abe expressed relief about no longer needing to focus on profitability, high sales volumes, or specific hardware controls. While he currently lacks ample time, he still intends to develop his own games, aiming to create accessible titles that appeal to non-gamers and could prove useful to other companies.
