Glen Schofield, the creator of Dead Space, recently stated he was forced to release The Callisto Protocol by publisher Krafton despite significant internal struggles. Schofield expressed frustration regarding the timing, noting that the development team faced severe hardships due to the global pandemic.

The project, which saw a $100 million investment from Krafton, faced technical difficulties at launch, most notably framerate stuttering. These performance issues contributed to negative critical reception, although the game ultimately received a 79 rating in the PC Gamer review.

Schofield claims he worked to rectify these issues by releasing 86 patches, which addressed technical flaws and added new story chapters. Despite these efforts to improve the title, Krafton reportedly viewed the game as a complete failure.

The studio experienced layoffs in August 2023 and February 2025. Following the inability to secure funding for a subsequent project, Schofield retired from the videogame industry in 2026.
