Xbox leader Asha Sharma recently informed employees that the organization faces a critical need to develop enduring new intellectual property. During a company town hall, Sharma cautioned that the firm will not survive if it continues to rely solely on existing franchises from the past.
The strategy involves finding the courage to invent new concepts that appeal to diverse audiences. While prioritizing these new ventures, Sharma noted that the company remains committed to supporting its strongest established titles, aiming to transform them into global billion-dollar franchises.
This shift follows a period of significant business restructuring, which included the cancellation of several new projects such as Project Mara and Everwild. The company has also experienced the loss of approximately 3,200 jobs and the divestment of five studios during this ongoing reset.
To foster innovation, Xbox has established a new internal team called Xbox Labs. Composed of existing engineers, scientists, and game makers, the unit will trial emerging ideas and technologies. Additionally, the company launched Xbox XP, a division led by Kayleen Walters focused on transmedia brand extensions like the Fallout television series.
